Made some soap for the first time. The only ingredients I used was olive oil, coconut oil, palm oil, hemp seed oil and oatmeal to act as an exfoliant.
I was tired of using the industrial made soaps the are made with nasty chemicals and always dries you out.
These have to cure for about 3 weeks before they can be used.
Just wanted to share this, thought it was neat.

I've been planning to make some soap but just haven't had the time. I have a lot of tallow saved from a couple of cows I had butchered. Haven't decided on the recipe to use yet. I'll probably put some sage in it because I like it.

Can you post a step by step?

Good job!

With this soap you can make your own laundry detergent by adding 1) Washing Soda, 2) Borax, 3) Your Real soap

Nice work

After you try it out, let us know how it works compared with the generic industrial soap.

This is the gist of it as a step by step will be more thorough and have exact measurements and what not.

1. Add the lye* to the water. Let it cool to desired temperature.
2. Heat the solid oils until they are in a liquid state then mix in with the other liquid oils. Let it cool to desired temperature.
3. Slowly pour the lye into the oils and mix for about 5 to 10 minutes. It all depends on how soon you reach “trace.”
4. Once you’ve reached trace you pour it into a pre-lined mold. Let it sit for 24 hours then cut it into the bars.
5. Once cut, you let them cure for 3 to 4 weeks turning them over half way through the curing period.

*When using lye you want to be in a well ventilated area. Another very important step not to screw up is you always pour the lye into the water NOT water into lye. Also, lye is not in the end product, the soap. Lye is neutralized during the chemical process as the lye acts as a base and the oils or fats act as an acid to form a neutral (the soap).

Thanks. Are you willing/able to provide the exact measurements as well, or a link to an informative site?
Mucho appreciado!

Those are the exact measurements I used. The soap process that I used is called "cold process." If you google that you'll get a bunch of stuff on it. Same thing if you youtube it. It'll show you a step by step process. Hope that helps.

Hemp Soap
203 grams sodium hydroxide
1 pound 3 ounces distilled water
10 ounces hemp seed oil
6 ounces olive oil
1 pound coconut oil
1 pound 3 ounces palm oil
essential oil is optional

Thanks for posting this.

BTW, do you, or have you ever made your own lye?

No, I've never made my own lye. It was pretty inexpensive to buy.

I understand that it can be done with burnt ashes. There is a straining procedure...apparently it takes a few days but can be done with only camping tools.

Unless you are working with reagent or at least food grade sodium hydroxide you are very likely getting a good dose of heavy metals with it.

i've heard too.

I was wondering as that would be something that ashes could be used for.

I understand that it can be done with burnt ashes. There is a straining procedure...apparently it takes a few days but can be done with only camping tools. Back in the day's before corner stores. And the main trans portion was by horse , ox power, foot, etc, etc,.

Ashes were saved for making soap, and drippings saved from cooking, and fat rendered after butchering meat critters. That was the way it was back then. Ashes + water = lye + tallow = soap. (simplified) Got to cook it all.

UPDATE:
The soap turned out great! My skin didn't get that dry tight feeling I usually get when I shower. I made a few other batches with basically the same ingredients but added essential oils to the soap. That also turned out great!
