Went to the dealer for my monthly fix and was shocked to see no customers in his usually busy place, after inquiring about it he said it was creepy quiet today for some unknown reason. I was after a mere 10 silver rounds (generic) and he did'nt have them, his usually half filled bucket only had 5 rounds (all different) and 3 1 oz bars 1 of which was divisable into 1/2 oz squares but the previous owner had tried to split it by bending the thing so bad it looked as if the bar had practiced yoga and got stuck. I ended up buying a 10oz johnson matthey which looked like new and was in a plastic case for 400 frn's, this is officially the most I have ever paid for silver as I hav'nt purchased any since it was 22.00 an oz.
I asked the basic questions and was informed that people were selling gold and jewelry, but NOBODY WAS SELLING SILVER! nobody had sold him silver in days.
Hope this info is found to be of use.

For the last couple of months, The coin shops in my area did not have much generic .999 silver. Almost all of them did not have much fractional gold in stock for that matter. There are about 8 - 9 coin shops in within a 30-mile radius of where I live and I have either called or visted the coin shops and for the last couple of months. They either 1.) Did not have any silver or 2.) Did not have much silver in stock (less than 20 oz's) when they had it. I did have some luck last weekend when I went to one the the coin dealers in North Georgia (not far from the TN state line) and they actually had silver in stock and what was even better was the fact that and I was able to buy a silver art bar from this particular dealer and I paid only spot silver price for it. I got lucky on that day last week. This was the first time in almost two months that I purchased a silver art bar from a local area coin dealer.
Once spot silver fell from $49 to $33 in May, my main local dealer increased the premiums to $3-$3.50 over spot for 1-oz generic silver bars and rounds and SAE premiums went up from $4 over spot to $5 over spot and despite that increase, the SAE's were selling pretty well. The premium is probably still the same at my main dealer but I really do not know since it has been a long while since I bought and silver from my main dealer.
Overall, the local coin shop area is dry in terms of silver available and I suspect that it will be that way for quite a while. This current atmosphere just means that I have to be very persistent and to keep going back every week or two to see what silver art bars they have that I like.

You folks should try border gold in Vancouver Canada. Just google it. They sell to Americans and are reliable and will send you what you want for the same price your paying there in America. Takes a few weeks here in Canada to get it but it comes courier. They are totally reliable. At least for the few ounces I bought from them. Course I lost it all when my canoe tipped over going from Vancouver to Vancouver Island. Still, they have good spot and good delivery in my experiance.

The last 10 oz bar I bought was for $180 and I thought it was expensive at the time. Crazy.

Roughly the same for me, after it hit 20.00 ozt I switched to 1 oz rounds and bars, buying this little thing today actually felt strange for price.
so little silver for so many frn's... still... anytime you can trade pretty pieces of paper for something real....

I was at a coin shop two days ago. He had a nice box of 1 oz and 10 oz bars (including a 10 ozt US govt. issued bar). Silver was $36.07 and he was asking $1.45 above spot. I had no FRNs on me. I was tempted to run to the bank to grab a few $$ and buy some, and decided against it (I had limited time). The next day it jumped $2+. Oh well, opportunity lost. By the I pay the $1.45 + sales tax, I would still be behind today. I usually only buy at shows (no tax).

Yikes, how many ounces did you lose? If I ever go canoing [or camping to protect any electronics from the rain], I usually put my stuff in a Pelican case.
How long is the trip from the mainland to VI? I was there last summer when I went to Comox/Courtenay for a few days...

Coin shop report for 7/15; SoCal, Inland empire. I went in 20 minutes after opening, and it was kind of dead. Besides myself there were three other regulars. One looking at comic books, one checking out stamps, and one buying rolls of quarters. A woman was in there selling 90%. Several weeks ago I set up a contract for silver oz's at $33.50 to break the $1500 mark to avoid sales tax, and I was looking to pick up the remaining oz's. The scruffy bucket was a little dry, but I was able to pick up some xmas bars and some Onzas. I settled the rest of the contract with a few Au Dos Pesos. He did have eight oz rounds that I wasn't interested in and other generic rounds that weren't marked with weight or purity, and sae's(didn't want to pay the three dollar prem.)I have my 13 year old with me today and he picked up 50 90% dimes and a side job weed whacking the shop owners yard. (he lives around the corner from me)
