With the debt talks (http://www.businessinsider.com/live-coverage-obama-to-speak-on-debt-talks-at-6pm-2011-7) collapsing, it's getting harder and harder to say for certain that the US won't default.
While some people aren't convinced that this would be a disaster, there's a real chance that this would lead to an economic catastrophe, crushing the dollar, Treasuries, the banking system, and so on.
So with the August 2 deadline fast approaching, here's a look at some popular safe-haven investments.

"In case"??
It's a foregone conclusion, not at all a matter of if, but when.

If the us economy goes to true hell, I expect the world will follow. And all currency's will drop like a rock, only real tangibles will increase or hold value.

What are you talking about?? Copper, lead, and brass are a universal trade unit.
And why stick to ball ammo when there's Ranger Series T and Speer Gold Dot to be had??
My list is more oriented towards the most popular contemporary combat calibers, along with original GI ammo. While there may be a lot of 'em out there, .35 caliber revolvers are not up to par for combat in this day and age.

In most cases, the 'foreign ones' are the equivalent if not superior to the 'domestic ones'.
7.62x54R is the rough equivalent to the '06, and people who can barely afford to buy a rifle can reasonably afford a Mosin-Nagant and ammo.
The 9mm Luger is probably the most common pistol round out there currently (and although not my favorite, one has to acknowledge that it is widely used).
While the 7.62 NATO (.308) may be 'foreign' in origin, it is currently the most common high power rifle round and still used by the DoD in M-14s and M240s (FN MAG).
And as for the 7.62x39, there's tons and tons of AKs and SKS rifles out there - and while it may not be as accurate as the poodle-shooting .223, it's got acceptable performance against two-legged varmints (whereas the .223 does not unless you go to specialty rounds matched with the right rate of twist, which is a PITA to keep track of)
And the 5.45x39 is superior in wound characteristics to the 5.56.

Where do we even buy farmland to begin with? Does anyone on this forum have any experience with this? I was hoping to sell some of my gold/silver later when it increase its value and buy a country home with a 1-2 acre plot if land. Something simple that can allow for self sustainability.

You would need at least 5-10 acres for garden + some livestock.
A better plan than trading gold and silver for dollars to BUY land is to find a property where the owner will accept specie or bullion in exchange for land.
As to where? Pick an area, move there and start talking to people. You will find the better properties do no need to be advertised to be sold. Word of mouth gets the job done. Once you have found a property before giving a knee-jerk ok to the deal make a quick stop at the recorders office with the property description and owner and go back through the entire history of it to make sure there are no tax lien interruptions to the chain of title from the land patent. Such an event is a cloud on the title and to obtain clear title you would have to pay off the present owner and track down the family of the previous (defaulted) owner. Bank seizures do not interrupt the chain of title like tax lien deeds do.
