Potatoes in Boxes

So I tried growing potatoes in boxes this year and nothing grew up past the first later. Has anyone used this method to do this and know what I might have done wrong?

The only thought that I had was that I was not covering the plants with enough dirt.

I have used the tire method similar to the box method just with tires and to "layer up" I would burry them till just a few leaves poked out and it worked great. I don't now how far or not you burried yours when adding a layer.
