Over a year and a half back I was wanting to see what I could do with one of those Wally World prepaid credit cards which are issued by a company called Green Dot. My intention was to use this prepaid credit card anonymously without attaching any of my own personal info to it. At the point of sale I was not advised that I would need to provide a Socialist inSecurity # to Green Dot to make it work, only that I would need to activate it by going online to the Green Dot website or by calling an 800 number. When I got back home I went online to activate/register the card I had in hand, of course not wanting any personal info attached to it I used an alias, and naturally this alias doesn't have a Socialist inSecurity #. First the name gets entered, so that name is now locked into that prepaid CC #. Then the next screen asks for the SS# which became a no-go situation - I was stuck with a prepaid CC I could not use. So I immediately go back to Wally World and demand the refund of the $200 I put down on the prepaid CC. I get static from the drone at the service counter for roughly 15 minutes until I demand to see her supervisor. I advised the supervisor that I was NOT informed at the point of sale that a SS# would need to be provided for the pre-paid CC to work as well as informing her I don't have same. I spent the next 45 minutes standing there as the supervisor tried to get the system to refund my 'money'. Finally, the supervisor handed over a full refund of $203.00 in FRNs (200 for the prepaid CC and a $3 service fee).

Now today in the mail I get this notice to the alias (I must have provided the office address in order to get this notice) that the alias has this outstanding refund of $203.00. The notice went on to say that if the alias doesn't claim these funds along with providing some form of govt. issued ID then the funds totaling $203.00 will be submitted to the State Treasurer's Office. At the top of this notice it is stated: RE: TEXAS Unclaimed Property Due Diligence Notification

How fascinating that a transaction that I have already received a refund on is now up for grabs by either the alias or by default the State of Texas Unclaimed Property Fund.

Throw a line in and see what bites.

That is not a suggestion. It's Govt MO. Let us know if some of their goons come by looking for Mr X.

It would have been interesting if you gave them a fake SSN and see what happens. If the second activation screen on their website matches the name to the number in real time and barfs at the fake it would be revealing. It sounds like just another scam to track your purchases and build your profile. Not worth it. Cash whenever possible to deny the beast its hunger for information.

How do you have an office job without a SSN. I'm genuinly interested since I haven't gotten SSNs for my kids and this is one of my concerns.

If they don't require it your in there. Otherwise chances are very slim, best bet is to have them write a private contract for their services paid in ASE or GAE which is legal tender as per the US code title 31 section 5112.

This will not be easy but not impossible especially if they are highly skilled and make people a deal they can't pass up.

Best part is their pay won't have FRN written on it!
