Here's something to keep in mind as you follow this evening's congressional debate over the debt ceiling (http://www.businessinsider.com/live-coverage-2011-7).

According to the latest daily statement from the U.S. Treasury (https://www.fms.treas.gov/fmsweb/viewDTSFiles?dir=w&fname=11072700.txt), the government had an operating cash balance of $73.8 billion at the end of the day yesterday.
Apple's last earnings (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-has-more-cash-on-hand-than-the-us-government-2011-7#) report (PDF here (http://investor.apple.com/common/download/download.cfm?companyid=AAPL&fileid=484701&filekey=6542e771-f256-4829-8135-0b1d88c7c2b2&filename=AAPL%20Q3FY11%2010Q%2007.20.11.pdf)) showed that the company had $76.2 billion in cash and marketable securities at the end of June.

In other words, the world's largest tech company has more cash than the world's largest sovereign government.

That's because Apple (http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/apple) collects more money (http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-has-more-cash-on-hand-than-the-us-government-2011-7#) than it spends, while the U.S. government does not.

(The Atlantic (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2011/07/the-us-now-has-less-cash-than-apple/242729/) and CNBC (http://www.businessinsider.com/blackboard/nbc) both pointed this out earlier.)

They don't give out free services and everybody that uses their product knows they have to pay for it

Wonderful. Corporations are a privilege owned and controlled by the executive branch. Therefore the government has ($73.8 billion + $76.2 billion), all in cash.

If Bill Gates has another $.1 trillion in cash you could add that in as well.

If the government were to dissolve then so would these corporations.

Plus, Apple has a license to print more apples anytime it wants to...just like the FR--and without utilizing a 3-D printer/maker-bot!!!

Now, just who will play the role of "William Tell?"
