The War on Lemonade.

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011 Creating new little libertarians.

Police in Coralville shut down at least three lemonade stands run by children over RAGBRAI weekend. According to Dustin Krutsinger, police shut down his four-year-old daughters stand after just 30 minutes. Krutsinger said the officer told his wife, “this isn’t the first time I’ve had to do this.”

Krutsinger said his daughter was selling lemonade for 25 cents a glass, and had made less than $5. According to the city of Coralville, 4-year-old Abigail Krutsinger was in violation of a two day ordinance, which required all vendors to have permits when RAGBRAI rolled into town.

Josh Schamberger, President of the Iowa City/Coralville Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the ordinance was passed to protect riders from possible health risks . . .

“If the line is drawn to the point where a four-year-old eight blocks away can’t sell a couple glasses of lemonade for 25 cents, than I think the line has been drawn at the wrong spot,” Krutsinger said.

A mother of six also said her kids had their lemonade stand on 18th Avenue shut down after just 20 minutes.

Bobbie Nelson said she laughed when a police officer told her that a permit to sell lemonade would cost $400.

“The kids were devastated,” Nelson said. “They just cried and didn’t understand why.”

RAGBRAI riders getting sick is not the story. The story is how their motivation to bike during the day is so that they can party into the wee hours.

If the beer doesn't kill 'em I doubt if the lemonade has a chance.

At a RAGBRAI several years ago in Maquoketa a foreigner got locked into a porta potty that got dumped on its' side. Wonder if Coralville passed an ordinance against this activitiy?

how is getting a permit going to make the lemonade safer? i'm willing to bet that for $400, they just give you the permit. i doubt a health inspector comes out and checks up on the operation. revenue enhancement.

I still think they should offer advice for sale and offer complimentary lemonade to those buying their advice.

After all, they do in fact have valuable advice to offer, seeing as how they've been schooled by the "man" and all. lol

That is understandable, they did not get their kickback from the vendor. ;D

Wouldn't that be practicing without a license? Also, as was noted recently in Miami, even if you are giving it away to homeless people, edibles still have to be made in an approved kitchen.

This will teach these kids that free enterprise is at last dead and buried.

Osoab, All they have to do is say they advise against running a lemonade stand, and then tell why.
It's not legal advice to tell ones own story of their personal experience.
...and if offered as complimentary lemonade, it's up to the person getting advice if they take it or not. lol

But seriously, the approved kitchen thing is exactly why they do stuff like this.
ie them kids coulda spit in that lemonade for all we know, or even used the municipal water supply to make it. lol

I don't know what's worse, the fact that we've gotten to the point in this country to outlaw lemonade stands..or, the fact that's there's actually soulless monsters willing to enforce it. What kind of person could actually shut down a lemonade stand and make kids cry? A person who lacks any sort of morality and common sense, a robot for the system. Pisses me off we've gotten to this point. I still think a revolution should be kicked off over a lemonade stand, say no to making kids cry!!

There's the culprit right there.

The regs have been there a long time now, but the enforcers used to use a bit of common sense when it came to things like this.

this is a chance for Obama to show his Freedom Fighter Spirit.

he can sponsor the Lemonade Liberation Act of 2011, giving children everywhere the right to have lemonade stands.
