Claims that the terror attacks of September 11, 2001 were orchestrated by US intelligence agencies are "complete nonsense," Prime Minister Vladimir Putin told attendees of a youth forum.
*"This is complete nonsense, it is impossible," Putin said on Monday, responding to a question posed by an attendee of the Seliger 2011 youth forum.

"To imagine that US intelligence services did it deliberately, with their own hands, is complete nonsense," the prime minister said. “Only people who do not understand the workings of security agencies can say that. It would be impossible to conceal it.”

Putin added that he could not imagine how "any of the current or former US leaders could have such an idea."

As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, skepticism over the official explanation of the 9/11 attacks appears to be on the rise. 9/11 “truth movements,” made up of diverse individuals from around the world, are demanding an independent investigation into those horrific events that changed the course of history.

The International Center for 9/11 Studies, for example, is sponsoring four days of Citizen Hearings in the city of Toronto, Canada with the goal of examining “the best evidence that has been discovered in the ten years since the 9/11 events occurred.”

A group of academics – including Niels Harritt, Associate Professor at the University of Copenhagen; Steven Jones, Professor Emeritus from Brigham Young University and Kevin Ryan, former Underwriters Laboratories manager – will be among the participants who hope to persuade the public of the need for another 9/11 investigation.

There will certainly be no shortage of protesters on hand as well to condemn the “conspiracy theorists.”

The events of 9/11 were not only the worst foreign attacks ever to happen on American soil. They also triggered a global “War on Terror,” which led to two full-scale wars among other less clearly defined military operations, and provided the impetus for a robust increase in US military spending (which has leveled off at just below $1 trillion per year).

According to the official version of events, the attacks of 9/11, organized by the now-deceased Al-Qaeda terror master, Osama bin Laden, left almost 3,000 people dead after a group of 19 terrorists hijacked four commercial jets.

The four pirated aircraft crashed into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center complex in Manhattan, New York, the Pentagon building in Washington, and an open field just outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Russian Apartment Bombings

In the beginning of September 1999 occurred a series of apartment bombings in Russia, which lasted for two weeks & killed almost 300 people. According to the official story told by Russian President Vladimir Putin, & the Federal Security Service (FSB), the bombings were caused by Chechen terrorists. Two men who denied involvement were convicted during a closed trial which was believed to be a charade. The bombings triggered anger by the Russian people which resulted in an invasion of Chechnya. It also made possible Vladimir Putin's smooth ascendance from Prime Minister to the presidency, by portraying him as a savior of the people. The BBC proclaimed, "shortly afterwards Mr Putin launched a second war against Chechnya. The military operation had massive support from a public outraged by the bombings."

During one attempted bombing some residents noticed suspicious activity & phoned the local police who arrived to discover a military-grade explosive in the basement of the building. They setup roadblocks hoping to catch the people matching the description. Upon discovering this, the perpetrators used a public telephone to contact a source, apparently for instructions on how to avoid the roadblocks. When an operator traced the call, it lead directly to the FSB in Moscow. The people who made this call were arrested by the local police.

On March 13, 2004, in an articled called, Secret at the heart of Putin's rise to power, the UK Telegraph wrote, "Shortly afterwards the two men were arrested. ... Each produced documents showing that he worked for the FSB. Later an order came down from Moscow ordering the local police release them." The next day, the head of the FSB announced that the entire operation had merely been a training drill. However, the local police concluded that the working explosive they found was the exact type used in the other bombings. Also, the bombings stopped when the FSB agents were caught...

Two sisters, who lost their mother in the attack, have written an open letter to President Dmitri Medvedev, urging him to mount a fully open, independent investigation. The sisters, Tatyana and Alyona Morozov, currently reside in Missouri. Their appeal (below) was published in the Wall Street Journal newspaper on May 30th.

Dear President Medvedev

In three coordinated bombings of apartment buildings in Moscow and Volgodonsk in September 1999, 292 people were murdered, including our mother Lyubov Morozova. We are writing this open letter to call on you, Dmitry Anatolyevich, to order an independent, open and full investigation of these attacks.

Although these crimes were blamed on Chechen terrorists and used to justify the resumption of a full-scale war against Chechnya later that month, there are numerous indications that Russian security services may have been involved. There is also clear evidence of a cover-up by the authorities. We do not consider this case solved.

Let us remind you of some of the facts:

On September 23, 1999, police arrested three Federal Security Service (FSB) agents who had planted a detonator and RDX – the same explosive used in the earlier bombings – in the basement of a residential building in the city of Ryazan. The FSB explained the agent’s activities as a “training exercise,” claiming the sacks of explosives actually contained only sugar. The investigation was dropped and all evidence classified “top secret.”
At about the same time, a Russian soldier discovered RDX in sacks labeled as “sugar” at his army base near Ryazan. The incident was never investigated and the evidence classified.

On September 13, 1999, the Speaker of the Duma, Gennady Seleznev, announced that an apartment house in Volgodonsk had been blown up – three days before the attack actually occurred.

Mark Blumenfeld, the property manager of our house on Guryanova Street in Moscow that was blown up, told our lawyer and several journalists that FSB agents had “talked him into” changing his testimony. The agents showed him a photo of Achemez Gochiyayev, a Chechen he had never seen before, and under pressure he “identified” him as the man who had rented storage space in the basement.

The composite sketch based on Mr. Blumenfeld’s initial description of what the real suspect looked like disappeared from the police file and was replaced with the photograph of Mr. Gochiyaev. Meanwhile, our attorney Mikhail Trepashkin, himself a former KGB agent, told reporters that he had recognized FSB agent Vladimir Romanovich from the police sketch. Romanovich was subsequently killed in Cyprus in a hit and run incident that was never solved.

In November 2003, on the eve of the trial of two Chechens later convicted for transporting the explosives used in the Moscow bombings, Mr. Trepashkin was arrested after a gun had been planted in his car. This prevented him from submitting Mr. Blumenfeld’s statement to court that the FSB agents had pressured him to give false evidence. The trial of the two Chechens was not convincing to us or the world as it was held behind closed doors and human rights groups noted numerous violations of due process. Mr. Blumenfeld’s statement and the replacement of the police sketch with the photo of Mr. Gochiyayev was never reviewed by a Russian court...

Borovik died in an aircraft crash at Sheremetyevo International Airport on 9 March 2000. The Yakovlev Yak-40 was chartered by the Chechen oil industry executive Ziya Bazhayev for a flight to Kiev. All nine people on board, including five crew, perished in the crash. The originally scheduled aircraft was due to depart at 8:00 in the morning of 9 March 2000; however, due to Borovik's planned flight being delayed, Bazhayev offered Borovik a seat on his aircraft.

The official investigation into the crash by the Interstate Aviation Committee revealed that whilst snow was removed from the aircraft exterior, de-icing fluid was not applied. The crew did not ask for permission to enter the taxiway, which was done at too high a speed for the icy conditions, and the flaps were set to 11°, instead of 20°. According to historian Yuri Felshtinsky and political scientist Vladimir Pribylovsky, Borovik's death may be linked to his publications about Vladimir Putin just before the presidential elections that took place on 26 March.
