Facebook Twitter StumbleUpon Tumblr Instapaper Close Candles are always good to have on hand in case the power goes out, but if you get caught without any in your house, you can make a dead simple candle with a tub of shortening and a piece of string.
We've featured a number of DIY lamps for those emergency situations, but it's hard to get any simpler than this. Just pull out a tub of shortening, put a piece of string in the middle, and light it up. Not only will it burn, it'll last for 45 days—enough to get you through a zombie apocalypse or two. eHow recommends using a candle wick, but you should be able to use regular old string, too—some people even say a rolled up piece of paper makes a good wick. For the full step-by-step, check out eHow's guide, and for more tips and tricks hit the link below.

You can do this with any cooking oil or fat.

you can even use a piece of wood as a wick. I have a candle that has a wood wick and it works well. Anything that can absorb and move oil up should work as a wick.

Try it with a can of tuna in oil. Then you get a good meal out of it later.

Since lard works too, this means that when TSHTF, Rosie O'Donnel and Hillary Clinton will NEVER need to be in the dark! ;D
In fact, you could probably light a good sized city with either one of them...

Finding a good wick would be a problem with that type of lard.

Ive been saving my bacon grease in a large metal coffee can. And I have some candle wick, I'm going to make a bacon scented candle! I'll always be hungry....
This is a damn good idea! Mmmm...bacon! ;D
I believe candles set a romantic mood with ladies, I think a bacon scented one could get the lovin' going even better. Diggity.

Next time I'm feeling romantic I can just pour a little bacon grease in her navel, drop a twist of dental floss in and light her up.

That's pretty kinky, Santa...I like it! ;D Follow where the bacon grease flows. ;D
I may try this tip.
I actually got another phone number from a gal online, she had a picture of her with an 'I love Bacon' T-shirt. I wrote her and commented on it, turns out she's a fellow bacon lover! I plan on calling her soon.
We should write a book, the Art of Seduction, with Bacon. :)
