Without going into excess details, I need some advice for selling some VERY expensive jewlery.
It seems my basic options are:
Jewlery store, to which I'll take a big hit on the price and probably ahve to report the sale
Ebay, to which I'll again take a big hit on the pay pal fee's and of course, shaddy ebay buyers
Cosignment, to which I'lll have a long wait period and have to pay a fee
Private sale, in which were talking an uncomfortable amount of money to be casualy exchanging
Any one else done this? Ideas appreciated, thanks!

Craig's List?
Maybe a Gold-dealer? Does it have any gold in it? There are places that will also take jewerly in addition to gold/silver.

I defintley DONT want to scrap it. The band isnt worth much, rhodium plated gold. But the princess cut 1.5 carat solitaire diamond thats sitting on top of it.....yeah......
I figure my best bet is to sell it private sale, for cash, but that carries obvious risks, but it'll likley be the most I'll get. A jewlery store would be safer, but Im dont want to report anything and have to pay any taxes on it if that may be the case.
I buy and sell metals all day from people, precious stones worth thousands of dollars, not so much. This is new territory for me.

a good coin dealer will give you 75% to 80% for the gold.
for the diamond - that could take a while.
if you need some cash NOW, i suggest taking pictures of the piece, and then removing the diamond.
sell the bracelet, wait up to a year for a buyer for the diamond.
CAVEAT - i'm not familiar with the market for 'used' diamonds.
can you post a picture here on G-S.us ? what shape is the diamond ?

Heim, the only way to get any cut on nice stuff is person to person. The only way to do that is to advertise private. I have stuff but fortunately live so far away from the crapyards it's tough to even get to town let alone remembering to conceal things then to advertise. You are in a tough area without serious connections.

There is no market for used diamonds. DeBeers owns the market and the jewelry stores pay what they are told for a fairly common and intrinsically worthless rock. This article goes into a lot more detail.

Well, we took the ring and got it officialy appraised today.
It was a little less than we thought, coming in at $5,700.
It was graded as an I-2 with a clarity of H
still havent figured out the best way to sell it yet, but thought I'd throw it out there for anyone that had any addition thoughts, opinions or ideas.
Thanks guys.

Good Heim , but it should read clarity of I-2 color H.
Why don't you keep it and let Mrs. Heimdhal wear it ! :)

Yup.
Diamonds are such a scam! My ex-fiance bought me a diamond (against my wishes). When we broke up, and I returned the ring, he tried to sell it on all kinds of avenues - craigslist, ebay, private. A 4-month old used platinum diamond ring eventually sold back to the retailer for 60% of the original purchase price.
I told him diamonds were a scam. Maybe if he had listened to me we'd still be together. ;-)

I like diamonds ! and have a little collection ;) but I never pay retail for them. The last ring I bought was 1 1/2 carat , clarity of VVS color E for 800.00 it is a cluster but they are clean, quality diamonds. I will never sell just pass em down to the little one.:)

Sorry, I didn't mean to insult your taste. Keep on collecting them if you like them. But really . . . the value in the jewelry that you leave to the yapper will be in the metals, not the stone.

I used to work for a "catalogue showroom" back in the day, I'd look at the Master File, a BOOK-sized print out of Everythang they sold along with 3 columns of prices: Retail, then the price they actually sold it for, then COST, it was amazing the markup on the jewelry, gold, plat and stones.....a gold herringbone chain they sold for $235 costs them $79, after that education, I've NEVER bought jewelry again.....

Usually the cost of jewelry is a lot higher than the actual metals they're made of. So that means most of the cost is in the manufacturing of the jewelry.

TY for the correction Zap, I mis-typed ;)
My wife isnt much of a jewlery person and not that into diamonds. Her engagment ring is actualy a pearl she picked picked out and our bands are my parents old wedding bands, so were pretty basic kinda folk, lol.
However, the ring isnt mine to keep regardless. I'm selling it on behalf of my wifes aunt who went through a nasty divorce and cant handle selling it herself, so were doing it as a favor. If I kept it, I'd have to pay her for it and I dont have the kind of money to give her, nor would I buy a diamond at that price, I think its crazy.
I am trying to get her as much as she can get. Its all profit since she didnt buy it, her asshole ex-husband did, but I still want to get her the most she can. I dont mind if we sell it way below the appraisal, because I know even a couple grand would help her and her kids a lot especialy after all they went through in the multi-year long divorce (thats still on going). The ex has mad money and hes using it to make her life hell, so....

Here is an interesting book about the diamond trade.
http://www.edwardjayepstein.com/diamond/prologue.htm
It basically says that diamonds are expensive, because the market is controlled. Like gold all the diamonds that were brought out of the ground are still around, they are expensive to buy, but good luck to you when you try to sell them.
