This morning at 0805 UT, the magnetic canopy of sunspot 1263 erupt producing a powerful X7-class solar flare: SDO movie. The blast caused a brief HF radio blackout on the daylit side of Earth. SOHO coronagraphs show a CME emerging from the blast site. At most, Earth would received a glancing blow from the flank of the cloud on or about August 11th; a complete miss is more likely, however. Stay tuned for updates.

Though at those times, the earth had less electronics than was contained in a simple 1980's LCD watch. LOL. But those telegraph lines surely burned... They didn't get anxiety attacks from not being able to watch American Idol...

Looks like our chances for another x class flare have increased.
Sunspot 1271 has developed a "beta-gamma-delta" magnetic field that harbors energy for X-class solar flares. It's getting closer to being earth faced.

I don't know if this is related to CMEs or flares . . . My outdoor thermometer is on the fritz. It read 100 degrees at 8 am, when it was really only about 48. Same day, my bathroom scale added 10 lbs to my weight. WTH?? Next day the scale was back to normal and so was the thermometer. Hum.
