The White House just announced that all public events have been cancelled today, including a much-publicized appearance by President Barack Obama at a company in Springfield, VA to highlight new fuel efficiency standards.
Obama has faced criticism over his slow response to the Standard and Poor's downgrade as well as the stock market plunge.
As the Fed meets today, there is some speculation that Obama is preparing an announcement on the economy — perhaps that he will call Congress back into session from its August recess to pass job-creation legislation.
The White House laughed off such a proposal in yesterday's press briefing, but has been facing mounting criticism from both Democrats and Republicans to take more of a leadership role on the economy.
We'll keep you posted if anything develops.

The sad thing, is it doesn't even matter what jobs they create anymore. I should pitch Curious George in the white house the ditch digging idea. Hire half the unemployed to dig ditches, and then hire the other half to fill them back up again.

He will eat it right up...jobs keep idle folks from the break snapping point to where they loot, burn, and fly planes into gov buildings. Low paying jobs give people money to spend, since our economy is 70% consumption, this will create more jobs. They can come home from work, watch TV,and see exactly that they should spend even more money...which creates debt. Now the banks are happy again. The banks can hire more crooks, and we can keep this cycle going until all the middle class producing jobs are gone, and you are left with the elite and the poor minion slaves staring at the tv they can't afford the monthly payment on.

Debt, slaves, debt...we'll make sure it doesn't implode on Obamas's watch, let the next president, and our next generations deal with the whole ponzi scheme when it collapses and we're suddenly a third world country.
