Should Bert and Ernie get married?

12 August 2011 | 03:16:49 PM | Source: CNN

The relationship between Sesame Street's famous muppet friends, Bert and Ernie has sparked worldwide debate.

A Facebook petition has been started encouraging the pair to get married, though the children's show has repeatedly denied Bert and Ernie are gay.

CNN reports The Sesame Worskshop, which produces Sesame Street says that while Bert and Ernie are identified as male characters, they "do not have a sexual orientation."

The petition members say they want Bert and Ernie to be role models for young viewers.

What bugs me most about this is that the age demographic of the kids who watch this show (2-5 year olds) don't understand sexuality yet. Bert and Ernie are just best friends, and who of us as kids didn't have a best friend at that age? So all the little boys who have a best friend and see Bert and Ernie getting married will wonder if they should marry their best friend too. This would ruin a child's understanding of platonic relationships and friendships.

That is precisely the plan, Franks. You know that.

Yes but many of these brain dead fools who think this is a good idea have no clue how confusing this would be to young kids. It's not just promotion of homosexuality which kids don't understand, it's destruction of wholesome "best friend" relationships that kids do understand.

Ernie and Bert live together in an apartment in the basement of 123 Sesame Street. Ernie and Bert sleep in separate beds, though they still share a bedroom. Some of Bert's interactions with female characters appear to show that he is attracted to women: serenading Connie Stevens (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connie_Stevens) in the Some Enchanted Evening segment (http://www.wikia.com/wiki/c:muppet:Some_Enchanted_Evening) of a first-season episode of The Muppet Show (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Muppet_Show), and recording a song about his girlfriend, I Want to Hold Your Ear (http://www.wikia.com/wiki/c:muppet:I_Want_to_Hold_Your_Ear), which was released on several albums.
Despite appearances for either Bert or Ernie being gay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay) or heterosexual (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heterosexual), Sesame Workshop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sesame_Workshop) states that the two "do not have a sexual orientation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sexual_orientation)."[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_and_Ernie#cite_note-Time_Magazine-6)

Bert & Ernie Sing-Along

The album starts out with one of the rare times you hear of Bert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bert_%28Sesame_Street%29) taking a bath. As he does so, he is heard singing "Yankee Doodle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yankee_Doodle)." Eventually Ernie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernie) comes in and pushes their piano into the bathroom and decides to join in, much to Bert's dismay.
