I have an 1855 Bouviers law dictionary. It has plain brown leather covers.

I just purchased an 1862 Bouviers law dictionary. Quite ornate. Color of law (during Lincolns' rebellion). The cover tells the tale.

I would speculate that had the publisher made note of the change from law to color of law a case of treason could have been brought against him. Instead a marble paper cover tells you all you need to know.

You have a way of really seeing these things from a very unique perspective, which in turn sparks new thoughts. And for that i thank you sir!
