Compost !
one of the better gardeners i've ever learned from used bone meal & blood meal to enrich cheapo gardening mix, which is basically bark fines - ground up bark.
but that bone meal could be a little gristly to process in the case of human bodies.
probably easier to bury them - and then plant some crop that can derive nutrition from the de-composing bodies.
perhaps some of the bodies they need to bury have gold crowns which could pay for the cremation.
how's that for practical ?!
i think the ability of communities to discuss this issue, and issues of water & sewage (if you are in a drought, why use water to flush urine down the chute ?), will make a big difference in the next century.
using natural gas to cremate bodies collides with other economic imperatives - e.g., Canada is bound by NAFTA to use some of their natural gas to process tar sands.
what if some broke Canadian town decides to prioritize hot baths over cremating bodies over making gasoline for The Americans ?

Well, with most vendors running at least 6-9 months on getting paid, I would say that the poor have been on the better end of state payouts in ILL.
