Tampa police said they were able to thwart a mass murder plot that was planned for the first day of classes next Tuesday, CNN affiliate WFTS reported.
Hillsborough School District spokesperson Steve Hegarty confirmed to CNN that a former male student, who hasn't attended Freedom High School for a year and a half, had been arrested in connection with the alleged plot.
That student allegedly had planned to kill 32 people, including two principals, according to the St. Petersburg Times. (http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/08/17/reports-tampa-police-probe-alleged-mass-murder-plot-at-school/) Police told WFTS the suspect had materials to carry out the alleged attack.
Hegarty said the school became aware of the incident when the Freedom High School principal sent out a "robocall" to parents and teachers.
"We take threats seriously," Hagerty told CNN.
Hagerty said he had no further details about the investigation and said he was awaiting more details from police. The St. Petersburg Times reported that the Tampa Police Chief and Hillsborough County Assistant Superintendent for Administration will speak at a news conference scheduled for later Wednesday.
