As I'm sure you know PatColo, there are two conventional wisdoms of politics when campaigning:

1. Never get photographed while eating (i.e. Michele Bachmann)

2. Avoid getting photographed in a hat or similar covering (i.e. Mike Dukakis).

No one looks good when eating, no one. Hats can make a candidate look goofy or sinister. They are considered out-of-fashion politically.
