I been fishing all my life but never much into lure fishing...a few months back I went out on my buddy's bass boat and hooked onto a couple nice ones and now I'm hooked.
Gonna be in my 1st tournament next month as his back boater.
Anyone else got bass fever?
Looking to buy my own boat here soon...

Never really cared for bass. Eating wise that is. Fun to hook into.
I use 4-6 lb line, everything is a challenge to bring in, or feels like a trophy.

Used to fish for Largemouth quite a bit. Never did the tournament scene - but I knew some guys that did. I more or less grew up a bass fisherman and so when I was older, I began to fish the coast more. Bought a boat in 03 and would often fish for Hybrid Striper (fresh water) and white bass in area lakes and at the coast fished for speckled trout and redfish ... that was some good times. Sold the boat summer of '08. It was a black hole for money.

I haven't in years, but growing up I would bike many miles in the dark of the morning or night to the best fishing holes.
There is nothing like the thrill of using a surface plug, sneaking up on a deep water access near shore at night, and getting a shark-like attack on yor lure.... then a powerful pull as the fish heads for deeper water.

Pound for pound, bluegills and red's are the best tasting and fighting fish there is! Need a mess of them to make a good meal, but other than the small bones, best eating there is.
If a bluegill was the same size as a bass, I think you will be pulled out of the boat, and/or the boat will be dragged around. ;D

I used to fish golf course lake as a kid mostly using rubber worms and caught 10-15 per day due to the lack of fishing pressure.
I then started fishing saltwater and caught snook fever for the better part of 3 years.I haven't fish for large mouth in 5+ years and don't really miss FW as most of the fresh water near me is polluted by runoff so the grocery factor is out.

I like smallmouth fishing better then large mouth. I also prefer hitting small backwater steams with standing pools (where the lunker smallmouth hang out) instead of lakes.
For eating give me crappie or bluegill. I actually fish for these two the most when I hit the lakes. Small spinners or small crankbaits are my lure of choice. I rarely fish with worms.

Been fishing close to 15 tournaments a year since 1996. Very addicting!! Probably spend close to 300 hours a year on the water....not bad for the northeast.
Love a pan fried Smallmouth fillet from time to time, but typically will only keep the Walleye that I hook as a bycatch.

Thanks for the invitation, Last Reort!
You guys probably all have what works for you, but I have my own prefered technique;
A Senko soft plastic worm, hooked wacky style. Cast it out, let it sink, crack a beer, wait 45 seconds, re-cast if it hasn't been hit by then.
Minimal work required. No movement or trolling. Just sit and wait. The Bass will suck those Senko's up right off the floor! I catch tonnes of fish like this.

A technique that can't be denied. Senkos are pricy, a 100 pack of the right size O-rings from your hardware store will keep the hook from tearing the Senko... just roll it to the midway point and run the hook under the O-ring.

Thanks man. That is a really great tip!
You can buy the same lures from other less expensive companies too, you know. Ko-Man-Chi, Yum, etc.

I'll eat 'em all, but personally, I'd take a bass, walleye, or a Simcoe perch in beer batter over a trout. But like I said.....I eat and enjoy all of them. Ate many Huron rainbows over the years and yes, they are delicious!

Georgian Bay, Lake Huron. Small cheap derbys but it makes it a bit more fun.

I like em all too...LOL Since the baitfish collapse on Gbay the rainbows have shrunk in size and have to rely on a broader forage base. They are defiantly more tasty than pure shad or smelt fed rainbows.

Buzzbaits thrown while a partner walks the dog can be deadly. I will jig fish along side topwater as well.

Is that related to zebra's? I noticed inland lakes on Manitoulin were skinny on bait also and the bottom had a lot of mussels. Water was much clearer than normal also.

no question the senkos work AMAZINGLY well, Awoke was right on point with that one! personally, i prefer top water with a plug or a slug-go, but only cause it's more of a rush. its cool when your rod bends in half from a big lunker down deep, but nothing beats the rush when you see a swirl behind your lure, and watching it and the surrounding water disappear like someone flushed a toilet!
just as a side note...if you are using a braided line like i use (berkeley powerpro green, 20 lb test, 6lb dia.) that has minimal stretch, and you find you are having trouble hooking the fish, try adjusting your drag so that it will slip just a little with the force of a solid hook set, so you aren't yanking it out of their mouths.
also, my absolute favorite lure of all time is a bass spinner with neon green and yellow skirt, with either silver or gold colored willow leaf blades, and a 4" salt and pepper plastic grub on the hook (tail down). this lure works excellent for walleye, bass, pike and musky. i have personally caught all of them on this set up.
second fav is a "texas rigged" s/p tube jig body on an offset hook, with a 3/8oz slip sinker. jigging in the weed pockets with this rig will produce results with walleye, bass, and pike.
for some reason, this particular salt and pepper color scheme, and the yellow/green skirt of the bass spinner are a deadly combination. i have caught fish with these two lures so much, that they are the ones i keep tied to my rods...if i use something else, it is usually a 3 or 4" white Mr Twister grub on a 3/8oz jig head.
these are the three lures i never go fishing without. what do you prefer?

While I'm no biologist, yes I believe the zebra's shared a good part of the responsibility for the baitfish crash.
They cleaned the water robbing the smaller fish of food, and made it easier for the cormorants to fish and help decimate the baitfish population.
Sorry for getting off topic Kali.

I'm also not trying to hijack here Kali. Just want to add one more comment on the issue. LR, pm me if you want to discuss further or if Kali doesn't mind, maybe he can let us know it's cool to redirect a little....
One of the lakes on Man. Isl. that I have fished for probably 25yrs+ has changed enormously. Like I had said....clear water, less b/f. But also, where as before you had to sift through 50 wormy perch to catch a decent wormy bass, now the perch are absent and the lake is full of large, clean bass willing to participate. I'm totally aware of the cormerant issue, and tend to mentally note all of that stuff also, but I am having a little trouble putting all of the pieces together on what exactly is happening. I should probably go to the experts and contact the mnr to find out. lol. (sarcasm smiley here).
Good luck to you in your upcoming derby's. Let us know how you made out and post some pics if you can. Gonna try and get out fishing this week myself. Either Lake O or inland for some wallys.
Ps...are you having trouble on Huron with (I think) sea flea?? larvae...the stuff that builds up on your line like wet felt?

Buy any Hula Poppers? They've been a long-time favourite of mine for years.

You guys can take this thread in any direction you want...no worries.
Haven't tried Hula Poppers yet...Mainly what I heard works out here on the Delta is Spooks and Sammy's...just not enough hours in a day to try out everything either.
I think Im addicted to buying lures...probably have over 100 topwater and crankbaits...
Found the boat I want too...a used Ranger...should be out on the water soon...

not that any one here has a problem how much fish you have in your freezer, but in ontario, the MNR look at it differently. regulations are as follows...
(from the website)
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/en/Business/LetsFish/2ColumnSubPage/199168.html
Fishery laws limit the number of fish you may catch or possess. The number depends on the type of licence you hold, the species, the zone in which they are caught and, in some cases, their size. Check the zone regulations table to determine the limits for the species you are targeting in a specific zone. Zone regulations tables are found in the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary.
For some species there are no limits. In these cases no reference is made to a limit in the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary.
The catch limit is the number of fish you are allowed to catch and keep in one day, and includes fish that are retained for any period of time and any fish eaten or given away.
The possession limit is the number you are allowed to have in your possession on hand, in cold storage, in transit or anywhere. Possession limits are the same as one day's catch limit except where otherwise specified.
In the Ontario Fishing Regulations Summary, refer the section titled Season and Limits to determine the limit for the zone in which you will be fishing, the species you are after and the type of licence you have purchased. "S" refers to limits under a Sport Fishing Licence. (For example: S-4 means a catch and possession limit of four.) "C" refers to limits under a Conservation Fishing Licence. (For example: C-2 means a catch and possession limit of two.)
If you catch a fish after reaching the daily catch and retain or possession limit for that species, the fish must be released immediately back to the water. If the limit is zero, anglers may practice catch and release only and any fish caught must be released immediately back into the water in a manner that does not harm the fish.
For some species there are no limits and no reference will be made to a limit in this Summary.
REMEMBER: It is illegal to destroy, or to allow to spoil, fish which have been caught and which are suitable for food.

I was gonna say... What the hell are the catch and possesion limits down there? LOL 50lbs of walleye in the freezer... I think I have 3 whitefish from georgian bay this spring a small bag of perch, and 15 or so specks from northern Quebec in my freezer.
Don't know what sort of powers the fish and game guys have down there, but up here the game wardens can come to your house and search all your shit no warrant needed.

If you can’t decide which lure to buy and which not to, buying fishing lures can prove to be tricky. The fundamental strategy right behind purchasing angling lures available for sale on http: //mausfish.Com/ is to select lures that are developed specifically for your seafood that you generally hunt.
