View Full Version : Berkey water with fluoride filter tastes funny

We just set our Berkey Light up with 2 fluoride PF-2 filters (the big white ones).
We instantly noticed it have a funky taste to it, a little salty/sweet. Not major, but not the most pleasing. Without the fluoride filter (just the black ceramic) it taste fine, just like plain, filtered water.
I noticed when priming the Fluoride filters, there was a lot of residual dust and the water was cloudy through 2 or 3 full loads of water. I didnt taste it till it ran clear. We did the food coloring test and it passed with flying colors (still gets me every time).
Could this just be because the filters are new and they have something different in them? Is there a way to make the taste go away? I have them soaking right now, was going to leave them over night but without the fluoride filters, it kinda a big chunk of our purpose for getting the Berkey.
Has anyone else noticed this?

I used berkey for years, w/ flouride filters.
when you first put on new filters, you get some fo that, it also filters really slow...
I think the guideline is to just run a full tank through it, then it clears up.
if after running the recommended water through it, still no improvement.
Check all the seals, physically inspect the filters (you will need to take them off the spouts),
I suspect it just has some residue in it, and you are working through that....

Ive run over three loads through it and while the clarity of the water has improved, the flavor has not. I've also primed them three or four times on the faucet. Im at a loss. Maybe I just got some bad filters?
What do they use in there to take the fluoride out anyways?

I always ran 3 more loads of water than it suggests before trying it and I prime the filters, and made sure they ran clear. When you prime them make sure you use that rubber washer thing and make a seal with it on your faucet, and get a solid stream of water come out. It first comes out white, then it turns clear after a second or two. I've never had this problem, the water tastes like nothing. I would call the people you bought it from an ask for a replacement.
Berkey? I don't own one of those in the great communist state of California.

Ok, I took another crack at it cause it was REALLY pissing me off, lol.
I re-primed the fluoride filters AGAIN, but this time held each one under for about 2 minutes total on some pretty decent pressure. This was after letting them soak for a couple hours.
Instead of reassembling everything and waiting, I just put a cup under it while the water ran through and took a swig from each filter. I finaly got to the point where I couldnt conciously noticed the funk taste. I say conciously because my brain was trying to play tricks on me "Is that it? No, i dont think so... Maybe? No, no its good."
So, I put em BACK into the system and am running another load right now that I will taste in the mornign and compare to some I filtered earlier today without the fluoride filter.
I guess, like Shami said, it jsut takes a lot more priming and filtering than they suggest. Well see in the morning, but those fluoride filters are important to us, so they better work! ;)

An update?
Oh yeah, sorry :(
Its all good now. We've used several batches worth out of it since we've had it and it taste just fine. It just need a REALLY good extra thorough cleaning of the fluroide filters, but all is well.
We keep a gallon of filtered water in the fridge for use as well as any drinks made from it (like tea or something) and keep the berkey itself full on the counter for use in pots and pans, etc so theres always berkey water around. Couldnt be happier!

thats great you are getting off flouride
anymore, thats all I really push in encounters with "newbies"
The conspiracy stuff is usually to much, so if I can just explain that if you get off flouride your I.Q. increases..... etc etc
well, a lot of folks start seeing part of the conspiracy on their own (with their flouride free thinking)
so instead of talking 9/11 or chemtrails, I talk flouride...
