SANTA ANA (CBS) — A San Juan Capistrano man is behind bars Friday after allegedly assaulting his neighbor with a flashlight over a noisy generator during a blackout that left thousands of local homes without power.

Peter Quill, 45, is accused of hitting his neighbor, Anthony Morales, over the head with a flashlight after complaining about the loud hum of a generator he was using during the widespread power outage, authorities said.

Neighbors say Morales is a Los Angeles firefighter.

Quill reportedly confronted Morales on the 27800 block of Via Estancia shortly before 11 p.m. on Thursday and asked that he turn off the generator due to the excessive noise, said Orange County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jim Amormino.

When Morales refused repeated requests, Quill then allegedly returned to Morales’ home with a flashlight and attempted to turn off the generator himself, said Amormino.

Morales was hospitalized with lacerations and a possible concussion, said Amormino.

Residents in Orange County used gas generators to power their homes overnight during the outage that lasted through early Friday morning, according to officials.
Quill was booked into Men’s Central Jail on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, Amormino said. He is being held on $25,000 bail.

Well, at least he didn't get killed over a generator.......as some will be WTSHTF.

Do they just make this sh*t up as they go?

Could easily be, recall those deathly heavy police-lights? 2-3 ft. long?

I guess I will have to get a permit to carry a concealed flashlight then. Ought to get a laugh out of the sheriff.

Do you suppose they have classes on how to handle a flashlight (don't point it at anyone you don't intend to illuminate?)

One of the first things the Marine corps teaches its cannon fodder: Just abot ANYTHING you can pick up makes an EXCELLENT weapon!

A 3 or 4-D cell maglight is a SERIOUS metal baton/club... and even cheap-o plastic flashlights can do some real damage if wielded properly.

I have an obnoxious neighbor who ran his generator near 24-7. When all the power was off, it was the quietest and purest calm. Then the idiot started his noisy cheap silence-shatterer.... all around got irritated by it. He ran his in front of his garage- echoing around the area. Mine, in my back yard, was run a couple hours and then off 5 hours. Standing in my back yard with mine running, I heard his louder than mine. Mine could not even be heard from the road.

Some people will not be on my protection list.

I'm absolutely certain I could bludgeon someone to death in a matter of seconds with a 3 'D' cell Maglite (with batteries in it of course).

I used to have a foot long section of DLO cable (diesel locomotive). Got it in the gulf. A company down there armors it and then extrudes another coat of PVC over that and they use this stuff on the jackup rigs to power the derrick and rotary table.

I would hate be the guy on the other end of a 'whack' with it.

In Texas, if you're caught with something like that in your car you could end up charged with 'carrying an unlawful weapon' whereas a Maglite is 'just' a flashlight.

There's a lot missing in this story. For example, you're w/o power, it's hot & miserable out so of course you have all your windows open for a breeze.

Maybe add in an infant/baby who's trying to sleep.

And then there's the neighbor running a noisy genny...

Dude wasn't asking for ice or cold beer, or moaning about his situation that we know of. But sill, people are able to snap at anything.

Shove a maglite down someones throat and it becomes as lethal.

I'm guessing the only reason to run a generator at 11pm would be to keep the refrigerator running. Maybe a small AC unit as well.

I think the lesson here, is that running a generator when folks around you don't have power...makes you a target.

Prepare. Build and test a way to soundproof your gennie.

This is very educational. I'm definitely going to scratch off gas powered generator now and look into solar and dynamo technology. I mean, that could have easily have been me since I'm a prepper, I was considering buying a gas powered generator. I went through the same power outage near that region. Not only is it important to prep, but do it stealth, and look like a typical sheeple.

Yep, we talk sometimes about getting a genny. I worry that at night, if the noise doesn't make you a target, the lit-up house will. Maybe try thinking in terms of just doing without power if at all possible when TSHTF. Maybe not so much if it's a blackout situation like in CA.

Below is a pic of the neighborhood that I think it happened in. In a place like that, its just common sense that when no one has power and a pissed of guy comes to your house at 11pm and tell you to turn your generator of, you do it.

My neighbors motorcycle and burnouts in the streets have driven me to the edge many times. Extremely loud noises ruin whatever your'e doing and wake up children. It should be a jailable offense. I could care less what you do as long as it doesn't affect me, then it becomes personal.

The guy in this story had the decency to go over man to man to ask the guy to quit being an ahole with the generator and the savage shows no respect for anyone else but himself, so i side with the guy who got arrested. The noisy savage (sounds like he was mexican) got what he deserved for being such a douche. I hope the arrestee is found not guilty.

So, you think a man with a generator, should not be allowed to run it, on his own property? Would you like marshal law so that it is all taken away from us? Would you prefer flashlights be used to to bash our heads in, or would guns be a better way of stopping our generator terrorist activities?

Or, should just mexicans not be allowed generators? I'm a bit confused by your post....I can legally go and buy a generator at a local store....yet, any asshole can bash my head in for using it?

Please explain.

Like i said. Do whatever you want but when you create excessive noise it becomes my problem. You're trampling my rights at that point.

The Beaner obviously didn't have any manners (most don't) or he would have been respectful of others, especially someone that came over and asked him to keep it down.

I think the key here is the time of day this happened. No one was up because when there aren't lights you go to bed at dusk. And there were no TVs, fans, or radios to drown out the noise.

If it was a white guy with a generator, and a beaner assualted him, how would you feel about that?

Just wondering, because I'm a white guy with a generator. Any man that assualts me with a flashlight, which I consider a deadly weapon if it hits me in the head....is likely to greeted with a bullet, or 10 bullets.

It would be a neighborly thing to do, yet, if you came at me with a flashlight intending harm....that's another story.

"neighborly" is out. The fight is on. That's life. You seem to justify bad behavior because of race. Face it, the 'beaner' had right to defend himself. He didn't break any laws...bad neighbor, yeah, I'll agree. That doesn't deserve to be attacked though.

The best solution is not to live in such confined areas to begin with, especially when it hits the fan. At that point, your mass psychology and meta people skills will be whats important, not the skill of determining who was wrong and who was right.

I probably shouldn't have injected race into this, but i couldn't help notice the names.

If you check the article again, it says the guy took the flashlight over there so he could shut the machine off himself. He didn't take it over there with the intent to attack the guy (even though he probably deserved it). I bet what happened is the hispanic confronted him and it escalated into a fight.

"the fight is on"? Over a generator? that doesn't make any sense. Any decent neighbor, no, any decent human being would show respect for others around them. And anyone who doesn't deserves their come uppance.

WTHSHT you'll be glad you were respectful to your neighbors. Your guns won't save you if you weren't. You have to sleep sometime.

The cardinal rule of survival is to be in harmony with your environment, i.e. to blend in and be as unobtrusive as possible.

When order fades away, it won't be a kindly visit from a pissed off neighbor to turn your generator off. There are dozens of ways to make that thing stop working permanently. He could have loaned the neighbor a cup of sugar.

I was thinking the same thing. They probably mentioned it to gain sympathy for the victim. This whole thing should have been avoided. It happened because you had a stubborn rude neighbor running his gen at 11 at night, and another neighbor with a violent temper. They clashed. The real victim is the flashlight. I hope it still works and goes to a good home after this. :)

Dig a large hole to put your generator in, cover with 3/4in plywood, leaving a crack for ventilation. Always make sure you have enough power cords to share the gen with a neighbor too.

First I've heard of such a thing. Anyone have any reviews/experience? Are they noisy?
