I have just been billed a "Gotcha" fee by GoDaddy, the second time this has happened.
In other words, they billed my credit card without my permission, for some reason that was buried in the fine print.
GoDaddy = Junk Fees ... just like a Bad Bank.
So I am now looking for a GOOD Domain name registrar - someone that you can recommend.
There's a lot to choose from -

http://www.icann.org/en/registrars/accredited-list.html Doesn't it just piss you off when they automatically charge your credit card without asking? Have had several outfits do that too me and when I find out , First I call my card co, and tell them it is an unauthorized charge. Then I call the biz and then ask them why, and then in a nice way tell them to go screw them selfs. And have them credit my account, And take my biz elsewhere.

yep, sounds like there's a lot of that going around.
since i will be interviewing domain registrar companies, i will ask for a few things -
* their patience while i ask 5 to 10 questions
* a chance to talk to the CEO and/or operating manager
* if they will let me pay by check.
what i did in this case was to report GoDaddy and their new owner - Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, in New York - to the FTC.
i also posted on the CEO log, telling them to reverse charges. normally i would ask nicely, but this is the second time they've done this & i am not in the mood to send them a thank you note.
it's only $5, a bullshit fee out of nowhere.
this is how the phone company and the credit card companies etc. make their money - they hit customers with a BS charge and hope nobody objects. it is a bullshit way to do business.
so now Bob Parsons at GoDaddy can take time to talk to Mr. Kravis at KKR & explain why they have both been named in an FTC complaint ... over $5. KKR paid over $2 Billion for GoDaddy - now customers are deserting GoDaddy.
it's a wierd business model.
problem is there's THOUSANDS of registrars ... well, maybe that's good, it's just that i don't feel like turning this into a project.
i think it relates to the larger state of the economy. companies are DESPERATE to show revenues. i had Meetup charge my f'ing credit card because i wanted to find a decent (i.e. strenuous) yoga class in Sonoma County a few years ago & joined Meetup for 3 months. i cancelled, & they hit for card for a second 3 months - totally gratuitous.
as the economy spirals down, giving your credit card or bank account number to someone becomes a MAJOR act of trust - and very few of them are worthy of that trust.
the main thing is to not let it affect 'one's head.'

I never allow auto deductions on my acct
Ever
I learned that hard lesson a long time ago .....if you give consent to your acct your going to get screwed badly
My favorite example is when you setup a auto.deduct on the 15th and things, are going along nicely for about three months ...then the 15th lands on sunday and the monday is a holiday so what does your company do
They draw on your acct on friday which is underfunded and sets off a chain reaction of.bounced checks and overdraft fees.
The banks tells you to pound sand on the charges because you gave company ABC authrization
I see it happen more times then memory can hold
What you should do it set up a auto billpay feature to whatever company you have and you can alter yhe pay scale at the click of a mouse.
But never give access cause it is a nightmare to get out of.....as a bank wont close a acct that has this feature and the company is under no obligation to undo those terms you agreed to
So dont do it

So dont do it One of the co's that did that to me was one of the anti virus big names, and there was nothing in the terms of agreement for it, but they sneaked it in. Any thing that has dues, or one year subscriptions and you use a card will try it. And not all will have a check box saying it is ok to auto renew.

GoDaddy owns Domains by Proxy, and now KKR & 3 other private equity firms own GoDaddy. Selling price - $2.25 Billion.
The situation has taken an interesting twist. Using normal GoDaddy customer "support", I was told that I had initiated the charge.
Now, if you have a credit card, and it gets charged by somebody without your permission, and the likely suspect vehemently denies making such a charge - how is that not a case of Identity Theft ?
I asked this question via the CEO Blog and my account was credited faster than JP Morgan can push down the price of silver in one of their normal 9:30 AM silver attacks.
However, this does not change the fact that, if I had not taken extraordinary measures, standard operating procedure at GoDaddy comes close to or actually constitutes identity theft.
Given that this took me about 3 hours to straighten out, and a considerable amount of anxiety - I have 20+ domain names with GoDaddy. It is 'disconcerting' to have a business partner who hits your credit card up without your permission, and then denies it IN WRITING to your face.
And then, in a separate written communication, GoDaddy fesses up to making the charge. But again, that was only after I made extra efforts to fix the situation.
GoDaddy claims to have 50 million customers. This is the second time they have charged my card without my permission.
What do you think is the chance that I am the only customer that GoDaddy has done this to ?
