Bad for the taxpayers, but I hope this family sues the shit out of the officer, and the department (if the department sides with the officer)

Us Taxpayers are already getting F'ed so hard that we wouldn't even notice a drop in the bucket if this family sued and won.

Cops have become nothing more than the high school bullies who pick on the kids who cannot defend themselves...

Cops have become nothing more than the high school bullies who pick on the kids who cannot defend themselves... Yes, but have you really thought when this started? When cops changed from serve and protect, into the jack boots that some have turned into? I monitor all of the local law here, on all levels, and so far at least here , overall they are not bad.

But there have been a couple of very questionable cases. And at least one really no question, did anyone go to jail. No!

Mostly it depends on where in the country and area you live , not to defend all but there are still good cops out there, but also some very nasty ones also that should join some of their friends in open population in prison. Soap bar anyone?

I first noticed it around 2002-2003. I used to watch COPS occasionally in college in the late nineties. Back then the police on the show were professional and respectful. A few years later I flipped through and saw it again. This time it was hard to tell who was the good guy and who was the bad guy. I wondered if they really behave that way or if they were just hamming it up for the camera. By now I think we know.

I have several friends who are in LE. I've never met them in a professional capacity, but in real life they are good guys. I've been wanting to ask them if they see the JBT attitude creeping into their departments, but I don't know how to approach the subject without being taken the wrong way. Maybe I'll just come out and ask sometime.

If you know them, ask them about it. The public's view of police is getting worse and worse it seems, that growing rift is not good. Maybe it's by design actually, to completely bring us to a police state.

A couple of personal things that bother me about LE. Maybe your friends can relate. The first, is the gang mentality that police have. They actually told us, day 1 after being sworn in..."You have just joined a gang". It is like that, at least for LE patrolling tough areas. I think it's a combination of a survival mentality coupled with a brotherhood mentality. The obvious problems with that is it's easily corrupted.

The second one, is you are trained that everyone can and will try and kill you if given the opportunity, so don't give them the opportunity. I understand this is for survival and self-protection. One of my academy mates, in the beginning told me there was a rumor going around that I was too nice. He said I needed to kick someone's ass to gain respect. My response, was I didn't sign up to go out and get into fights. There's definitely pressure in these depts to be "tough guy" to gain respect, which I completely disagree with. I eventually earned respect though, the whole story on that one I'd never tell on this forum...that's for sure though.;D

FWIW, most of the problems are with the law, law enforcement is enforcing "bad laws" (drugs, prostitution, tax evasion, etc)

if we had reasonable laws, and a lot of personal liberty, well the cops would all be pretty nice, and spend most of their time at the local donut shop complaining how bored they were....

sure we get some bad apples, but the bad apples generally use a bad law to excuse or validate their behavior....

"your in violation of such and such, you are coming with me"

"your in violation of such and such, you are coming with me"The trend was before 9/11 but 9/11 is a good date when political and personal relationship with cops, local, good minded , and the vampire change happened at that date and has ramped up locally there are some that I would elect to stay, others I would put into a cross hair and have no regret later.
Bit over all looking at reality some states and city's to have problems.

Some ass hats need to be taken out instally and others given a choice because not all are bad.
But the bad need to be neutralized.

look there are some bad cops, they are attracted to the power, violence, etc

they enjoy that part of the job, thats what they signed on for.

but most of them just went through govt run schools, and are following orders, want to go home at night see their families, get their paycheck, feel the system is not perfect, but it is better than no system.

think about how all of us viewed things after 9/11, before each of us "woke up", its a paradigm shift.

they only know one way to do things, and that is the govt way.

I do find it interesting when Greece went into full meltdown like 4 months ago or so (riots, etc), well the military refused to participate in any activity against its own citizens, and they were treated as heroes by the people, the police who obeyed orders were treated like dogs (there is a lesson there)

I suspect a lot of military (except the marines) would seriously question orders or violence against citizens
