View Full Version : Do all bike racers wear spandex?

Haven't mentioned it here but I've been heavily into biking for a couple of years, retired now and try to get in at least 30 miles a day. I've done a couple of competitions and a couple of centuries (100 mile rides) and was hoping to compete last week but a respiratory infection did that in.

I did get some pictures---

I wear bike shorts under my baggies when I ride and race. Here's me cruising to 2nd place two years ago.

It cuts down on muscle fatigue and the roadies use it for wind resistance as well.

So basicly yes.

Some of the spandex shorts have built in butt pads in them.

Cyclists are some of my worst enemies.

They just looooove my country roads. I almost hit one the other day because he saw fit to just
sit his spandex wearin' ass on his bicycle in the middle of the road around a blind curve on a steep hill on a one lane country road.

I'm not sure which state you live in, but here, what you decribed was perfectly legal, and is a safety measure. If I was that cyclist, I would've taken the lane also, as the last thing I'd want is an impatient driver trying to unsafely pass on a steep blind curve. On a steep hill, I could hit 60mph fairly easy on a road bike. Do you really need to go faster than that? This is a perfect example of why I don't own a road bike or ride the road.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think "there should be a law", I just think he was reckless just by being where he was.

I'm in Kentucky and there are some roads here that cyclists simply should not be on unless they have a deathwish and have no qualms about putting others in danger.

The dude that pissed me off was STOPPED on a bike in the road. He started moving after I swerved around him and honked to let him know to get out of the road or move along.

I don't think it should be illegal, but I grumble about them when I see them.

Part of it is the spandex. The spandex lets me know that they aren't merely traveling to a destination by bike; they are doing it for fun!

It's like driving around with your headlights off at night.

I don't think it should be illegal, though it may be stupid and unsafe.

There are definately riders out there that give courteous riders a bad name; like any other user group. And don't get me started on riders with ear buds in their ears.

Uhhh, NO! But I do wear biking shorts, they are padded, just try to sit on that skinny saddle for a couple of hours without padding! Actually most of my shorts are mountain biking shorts, they look like regular shorts but have an insert with padding built into them.

Ok Joe, I now forgive you for all your evil ways. :) That was a cool video.

I used to love what was called "single track" back in the 80's,
where you huffed up a mountain switchback to some ungroomed forest trail head and then bombed down the trail to the end at the bottom.Totally stupid, dangerous and fun.

I never liked road biking at all. The road is a boring, regimented, hot, filthy, nasty, poisonous, disgusting environment in which motorized vehicle drivers are more akin to demons in hell hoping to stab you in the ass, or in the dick.

I did wear spandex though, cuz I had a rock hard ass and I wanted chicks to notice it. ;D

And I probably was made infertile by the hobby.

If any white person ever wants to know what it feels like to be treated as a 2nd class human being by large segments of society for no other reason than the fact you exist at all, just go start riding a bike on the road in a manner prescribed by law in your State, and the idiots in this World will soon will find you.
It'll be about as close as you can come to knowing how Roas Parks must've felt that day on the bus.

I race DH, cross country, short track and super d. Last weekend I crashed my way into eighth place in a DH race. My mind wandered for a split second, and whump! Down I went. I've really been trying to race less and get out to great riding areas, like Sedona two weekends ago.

Gotta stay focused if you wanna go fast as well as staying upright. lol

Ever ride a pump track? No pedaling required.
I wish mine was like this guys. Oh well, maybe someday. I can dream, right? lol

Excellent point, you don't see too many other races in competitive biking do you? And don't forget Lance Armstrong had testicular cancer.

(I had to google DH to learn it means downhill (mountain) bike racing).

i haven't seen the butt pads but i remember the leather lining on the inside. theoretically to soak up moisture but maybe also help in the padding department.

I really doubt he got that from riding. Also, he ended up with it in a lot of other places too. Brain, lungs and abdomen per wiki.
...and women get ovarian cancer too and sometimes cysts and those aren't from riding either.

If most people rode regularly, you'd see better health and longer lifespans across the board. Cycling is one of the healthiest and lowest risk activities you can engage in.

You all need to fire up your welders and get on board the motorized bicycle. It will seriously piss people off no matter what. Just get your weedwacker and a few parts and a welder and you can flip off the whole planet while getting 130 mpg. It's a prep item - have one ready to roll. You might need groceries and stuff and not have much gas or a horse.

How about a motorized beer cooler, genuine redneck ingenuity?

i have 2 broken weed-whackers, gas-powered.

i'd like to hook them up so i have a dual weed-whacker long-grass-cutter.

in the mean-time, i have an old scythe, which i finally learned to sharpen good.

Those little weed wacker type engines are rated at about 50 hours lifespan. Third world countries have pedal assist put-putt motorbikes that get fantastic mileage. Not a bad idea to have one if you live in the flatlands.

When everything comes to a grinding halt, it'll be the other way around. How's your fitness base? Can you ride 100 miles in a day? How about half a day?

My fitness base is such that I could run with a backpack full of survival gear, carrying firearms and ammo, climbing fences and jumping logs, and still Bruce-Lee any MF'er that got in my way. Riding 100K on a bike is respectable but not realistic when TSHTF and the roads are monitored and under martial law lock down.

Even your mountain bike will not go where I will go.
