i've got 12 quart jars of bullion cubes put away. how long will these last? should i dry seal them, or are thy okay? they're the "dry" cubed kind, not the mushy bullion stuff.

i put them away to go with my dry canned bean soup mixes. want to make sure they last...

I'm still learning! I try & remember, there's no Bull or Lion in my soup.
Anyway, I'm guessing it'll last for years as is.

actually I bought a bunch of chicken bouillon in the plastic tub type container back in 2008-
left it un-opened till a couple months back- had mold growing in it.

:/

That was probably the loose type? Not the little dice bouillon?

I bought a 1.2kg. Best before 9/2009. Opened it maybe 12 months ago. I use about 2 tspns/mth so it's gonna take a while. It was strong flavour when first opened. 1 was more than enough. Now it is less strong but it's been open 1 year. I should have packed and vacuum sealed most of it or jar'd it. It doesn't show any signs of deterioration other than strength of flavour.

Bouillon cubes is something i've been thinking about adding to my next cache, along with spices

anything to ward off " food fatigue "

that's why i did it. you have to add something to 300 pounds of rice.

Hope this helps. DO NOT store your beans or any other food with your preserved bullion! ;D

I suggested it be kept in a sodium hydroxide solution along with an aluminium anode to remove these [silver oxide] layers and prevent others from forming. The oxides and the sulfides then get deposited onto the aluminium.

Depends. They typically have an expiration date. If not, call the manufacturer.

I prefer to make my own stock, reduce it, freeze it in ice cube trays, and use that.

They last a long time. We use them quite a bit (both the loose powder - Knorr stuff as well as cubes). If kept sealed they should last several years past expiration. Humidity is what generally gets to them, and they get funky after about 10 years. We get a lot of our spices and other stuff at the "Used food store" which is a local dent/scratch and inventory liquidator. We get some awesome deals there on stuff that is close to expiry or for whatever reason needed to be moved out. Expiration dates are complete BS.

The other fun thing about buillon cubes/powder is that they contain all kinds of fun stuff, most notably MSG. But you gotta do something with 300 lbs. of rice :)
