I'm sure they'll raise the ship only to turn it over to the crown.

Depends on if it was Northern Ireland or the Republic of Ireland..... or if the waters it was found in is considered under the jurisdiction of the United Kingdom and thus, the Crown.

From the article:
Under a contract with the U.K. government, the Tampa-based company will keep 80% of the cargo's value.

it's only in 14,000 feet of water.
maybe we should all chip in and buy a submersible.
as far as Biggest Boating Accident, i think those honors might belong to the "Central American".
Gary Kinder's book "Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea" was about the Central, and about the massive project to recover the gold.
it was a ship full of gold from the 1849 gold rush. it sailed from SF, around the tip of South America, then back up the East Coast, where it eventually went down off the Carolina's - with 21 tons of gold on board.
the book is mostly about the recovery effort & Tommy Thompson, the engineer who made it happen. what they recovered had a value of about $1 Billion in 1989.
since they weren't the only treasure hunters out there, that's one of the interesting parts of the book - all the stuff they had to do to hide the fact that they were hot on the trail of a size-able bounty. sort of like, "oh, no, we're not digging here - we're digging OVER THERE !"
i suppose ... 21 tons, call it English tons to be conservative, 21 x 2000 pounds, 21 x 30,000 Troy Ounces, call it 600,000 Ounces ... $1 Billion @ 1600 an ounce ... i think.
if it was worth $1 Billion in 1989, i guess a lot of it was historical & numismatic. nice haul in any case - and GREAT BOOK - i think you guys would like it.

I don't know why people come out and tell the public when they find a score like that.
Loose lips sink ships, and the Queen has enough gold and silver already.
Shhhhhhhhh!

They already have a deal in place with the UK government, the hunters get 80% of the find, not bad.
