Considering the goal of the hacker(s), one must wonder how pervasive data mining is, done by pirates from all sides (from usg.gov to hardened criminals [I know, as if there's a difference]).

Evidence has indicated to me lately that there's hardcore data mining occurring at all levels - a landline which has absolutely no corporate connection to me has been associated with a name I use on one of my yahoo email accounts. And I've taken pains to keep them unassociated. I was able to draw this conclusion because I've had several telemarketers calling on that line and asking for the name on that yahoo email account, i.e. there's only one place to find that particular name and that one place absolutely has no connection to the phone number. If the companies doing outbound telemarketing can have access to that level of sophistication, just imagine how evolved the techniques are by now.
