I am thinking that there would be problems running it on its side. They are designed for the heat to come out the top slots... on its side it would build up heat and in my opinion cause early failure of the toaster. It might work... LOL but I am bot going to try it!!! 8-)

I'd like to know how far the cheese on toast/grilled cheese goes once it is done. If you get the distance right they should land right on your plate. No muss no fuss... at least on the student scale of muss n fuss.
Toasters usually have a slide out tray on the bottom so you can get to all the tasty crouton-ey bits. A couple of computer fans bolted on there would help with the heat problem IMO.
it truly is a guerilla gorilla

It is somewhat of a fallacy to say that "heat rises".
Heat, being energy, conducts along the path of least resistance.
A more correct statement would be "heated air (or other medium such as water) rises".
Most (all?) metals are going to conduct heat much more efficiently than air.
The real issue with placing a toaster on its side is that since the side will get much hotter than the bottom regardless of orientation it should be placed on suitable surface such a tile counter top or trivet.

I think the trick would be to manually control the outside lever both to prevent uncontrolled ejection of the product but also to eject at just the right moment.

Quick and easy, toast the bread in a toaster, place cheese between the toasted slices and microwave a tad until cheese melts.
Do it here all of the time.

Nothing beats grilled cheese in a frying pan with butter.

Yeah, that toaster trick might be a fire hazard if you were to butter the bread. I'll use my cast iron skillet, thank you.

The Irish saved western civilization so we could have grilled cheese.

Nothing, except a nicely-seared thick ribeye on the side :)

I grew up eating grilled cheese (rarley) made basicaly like that but in a toaster oven. In fact, until about three weeks ago, I never had a traditional toaster in my life, it was always toaster ovens. I never knew the difference until my wife (then girlfriend) made me a REAL grilled cheese in a pan with butter when I was about 16.
Yeah, that was the wrong thing to feed a fat guy who loves bread AND dairy, esepcialy combined.........
