View Full Version : One last prep run...

If you had forewarning/enough time for one last prep run, do you have a list/cash ready?

Typically I pay w/ a check at Costco, but as others have mentioned, if you go over x amount, they call a manager over (here it's $200). I don't know if they do that w/ cash or not.

Anyway, have been pondering that the last few days.

One thing we have not stocked yet is dog food, so that's definitely on the list.

More batteries. More water. More of everything.

And if chaos seems imminent, an extra shotgun for the missus.

I looked over supplies this morning & have been adding to the prep stack every time I go shopping (for about a year now). I'm surprised how much I have accumulated... eek!!

But, unless you have a well, you can never have enough storage water. I'd like to add another 50 gals.

Let's assume city services were still functioning, and you wanted 50 more gallons. What is your plan? Buy bottled, fill up the tub, drain the hot-water tank, ?

Why use cash or credit on a last attempt. Max out a CC and head for the hills.

I have 10 5 gal. water bottles & fill them with alkaline water. I rotate them on a cooler & use them for drinking, mixing, cooking. I'd like to rotate in 10 more bottles so that if water did cut off I could use them for washing as well.

The 55 gal drum (although economical) is just too big for me to handle.

Fill the big guy out of the tap when TSHTF. City services will be running for a brief period of time unless something truly catastrophic occurred. Use that for washing and what not.

the last few days
i've taken out 20-25 library books

if TSHTF, returning library books won't be a high priority

As long as you have a place to put it and hose that will reach to fill it up, you can get a small manual pump to get the water back out.

That way there's no "handling" problem for you because it stays put in it's spot.
...and, because it's a blue barrel, I'm pretty sure you could keep it outside.

Also, they do make smaller ones that are 30gal size.

If you get one, make sure it was one that had orange juice or some other food product in it.

The 5 gal bottles are at my bug out apt. in the city. At home I currently have four 55 gal barrels to collect rain water, right now they are connected to each other in a series and used to water plants... They could be converted for emergency water. I may add in a couple more for good measure :D

Just curious, but your bugout location is in the city? Isn't that the reverse of how most are planning? ie to get out of the city?

Indeed. If your bugout plans don't include leaving the densely populated areas, then you're just fantasizing about long-term survival.

Maybe she just works in the city, and her bugout is at home?

Unfortunately, every shmo & their mother knows who and where home owners are... :( Although shelter, they are not really a bug out places... all mail, bills, the tax man, etc. go there...

Pretty much nobody knows about the apt. no records or nutin... :p

Hope to set up a rural hideaway in the near future...

I beg to differ... you will see survivors roaming the streets... & disappearing at night into the unknowns... this is my current set up.

I did say "long term" survival. Until you find a rural solution, good luck with the "roaming the streets" thing... sounds like an equation for disaster for me - regardless of how clever you are. All it takes is ONE mistake or chance encounter with someone smarter than you are, and there is ALWAYS someone smarter than you are in a high population urban center. BTW, I've lived in major cities most of my life, so don't take this as the "country perspective" by any means.

Pretty smart actually. In the cities, it will be assumed anyone surviving will be eating rats, etc, scavenging. If you look the part, and blend in, a bug out....or more bug *in* location could be very useful. The key is to fit in with the surrounding. Be out during the day, then locked, stocked..etc, at night. I believe you can fly under the radar in the cities, if you are smart about it.

If I read this correctly, ximmy already has two prepped locations (one urban and one sub-urban) and is contemplating a third (rural). She should be giving advice, not taking it.

I would buy as a bunch whole fruits and vegetables that can be out at room temperature and have a long time before the perish. Things like apples and potatoes will hold up a long time at room temperature, and sure will beat eating freeze dried foods. I would want to open up my freeze dried foods dead last.

I would also buy a shit load of London Broil cut beef, and make as much beef jerky as possible.

I'll have to pay attention to this thread since you guys have a lot of good ideas. I'm not as prepared as I'd like to be, but I know I'm probably more prepared than anyone I know in real life, or strangers miles away.

I'm coming to grips with that we'll never be as prepared as we'd like to be. I really think that a collapse scenario will be short-lived. I've got two 75 gallon water tanks onboard that I keep full, and can fill quickly if needed. A 50 gallon one, that leaks in the forepeak, but I can fix that if needed. I've got enough cooking oil for 6 months, easy, and enough food for at least 3 months. 12 months would be ideal.

I figure, if you can hold out the first month...without help, on your own, you are in the top 99.99% of our population. Nobody seems to care about storing more than that. Starting month 2, is where it would get interesting. Darwinism, the strong will seek to survive.

It will be martial law well before that. I would hope to be long gone before then. My two bits.
