Motorsport was mourning its second death in the space of a week after Italian Marco Simoncelli was killed in a crash at the Malaysian Moto GP.
The Gresini Honda rider lost control of his bike on the second lap of the circuit in Sepang and appeared to be hit by Colin Edwards and then Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track.

The 24-year-old's helmet came off in the collision and he was taken to the medical centre for treatment, but died from his injuries.

Damn, I haven't even seen last weeks race yet but this headline caught my eye.
I always liked Simoncelli, he was like a wild man, he raced like he had something to prove unlike some of the others that seemed content to place anywhere in MotoGP.
RIP.

Just got this prior to the start of the Italian League game between Bologna and Lazio.
You can see the sadness in the players eyes. :(

It was crazy. He low sided, which usually isn't bad, but he couldn't finish low sideing and get out of the way. Instead of continuing outside, he came back inside!!! That's when the rider behind him, hit into him, possibly in the back of his neck, as he lost his helmet. Sad, very sad.
Perhaps the problem is due to over engnering of the bike to prevent low side crashes? Why didn't he just keep low siding out of there, just on physics, at that point the bike should not be reacting on any inputs from the rider and his leg looked traped, so there was nothing he could do except ride it out in PAIN.
Even after seeing that, I'll take another low side crash rather than a high side crash, if I could have my choice.

Agreed. It was like the laws of physics ceased to exist. A body in motion will stay in motion, and in the same fucking direction unless acted upon. WTF caused him to stay in the turn when he was on the ground?

During practice and qualifying for the previous race to this one I think he came off his bike 3 times at the same corner of the track. Laying that bike over as far as he did he was going beyond the grip level the bike could give him. I think the bike was a bit short on grip TBH. It's a shame for sure.

As per my understanding of the physics involved, traction & stability are paramount. While throwing a sport / racing bike on its side in a turn, it should never lose grip, no matter the degree of lean, so long as the rear tire has power applied and provided the frame isn’t making contact with the surface and thereby causing a loss of stability. But when a bike low sides, for whatever reason, that’s it, she should continue to slide on out of there. Something strange happened here that I’ve never seen before.
Or perhaps I am ignorant about something here, because it looked like the front tire pulled it back into the inside? Could the rear tire assembly have completely lost all contact with the track? Even dead weight contact, while the front still had some grip?

LG you're right, but when you loose grip everything goes in that direction. It was like the perfect crash. It really does pain my heart.

It wasn't over engineering or whatever, it was Marco holding on to the bike because he had fallen off the bike was still upright (upright for a motogp bike) I'm sure he was hoping to be able to get back on. At any point he could've let go of the handlebars and the bike would've slid off. His final moments were just a continuation of his whole career, very determined and never wanting to give up.
As I said earlier Simoncelli seemed like he was the rider who rode most on the edge, sure he crashed a lot, or out braked himself, and was pretty aggressive but he seemed to ride at 100%. He was a racer, which is quite a compliment.

These bikes don't skid out like street racers.

That is one of the vids that came to mind when I read your comment, and as you can see had this rider not gotten back on so quickly he would've been on the otherside of the track or in the wall, or even run over from behind like Super Sic.
