Zap - I hope your girl is feeling better, poor thing. It's raining here. We went to a neighborhood party for a bit then I brought my younger one home. The older kids are out trick-or-treating being driven around in the back of a pick-up truck. I hate Halloween personally.

I'm with you JJ GoldDot. Probably not for the same reason though. I'm not too enthusiastic about a national holiday celebrating consumption of sugar. And cementing it in peoples minds by making young kids show up at peoples doors where adults pay tribute to sugar by poisoning the kids with it. And most disconcerting of all, everybody is all so happy about it.
Sugar. Why not alcohol? At least you'd get a buzz. Maybe we wouldn't have such an epidemic of diabetes. For everyone telling me to eat less sugar, there are a dozen voices telling me to consume their delicious products that are loaded with sugar. I'm sure sugar sales spike in the week prior to Halloween. I feel fortunate I never had a sweet tooth. Maybe it's because my parents kept me home on Halloween till I was 12 or so. Nevertheless, I would speculate that getting rid of Halloween would result in a 50% improvement of the nation's health.

You disappoint. I can hear you out about the sugar and all but the holiday itself is not some USA creation. It is many centuries old. It is also celebrated in many countries around the world. In many ways, the holiday is more closely celebrated to its origins than any other. The concept of "trick-or-treating", or begging in exchange for prayers for the dead or exchanging performance for treats is not unique even to Halloween. The practice is rather common to most long-tradition holidays although the practice itself has faded over time.

Unlike most parents, I have explained the pagan origins of Hallowe'en to my kids, and they fully understand that it's not something they should take seriously or spiritually. They know the root of the holiday is steeped in occultism.
So know that they understand where it came from and what it was supposed to represent, I feel we have rendered it harmless, so now it's just a night for the kids to dress up and have fun with friends and get some candy.

I'm solidly in Awoke's camp; fully aware and participating without fear.

Yeah... well I guess at the root of my bad attitude towards it is the fact that it's just one more indication of spiritual blindness - or more correctly curchianity turning a blind eye to the grip that evil has on the world. Active participation. Going along. I dunno. I just believe it should be completely cut out because unlike Christmas or Easter - there was no real attempt to depaganize it. (all Saints day just doesn't do it for me).
Just easier to go all "bahh humbug" I guess.
I totally trolled Halloween with this thread LOL.

I don't need a church to officially "depaganize" something for me to determine whether or not it is acceptable for me to participate. My relationship with my God supersedes any "power" the church may claim.

The CHURCH is the reason why it is celebrated in this day and age anyway. I was not suggesting that you need the church for anything. Its a sociological issue and the churches influence cannot be denied.
It was faced with a choice centuries ago and they were wrong.
It leaves us with a choice - justify and go along with it or oppose.
Your relationship with God is your business - but YOU brought it up.
1Thessalonians 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.
ETA:
It was not my intent to stir anything up - well from a theological or historical standpoint. But I guess I did. It seems I have offended.
That wasn't the intent but I can't apologize for it.
SLV^GLD
1st November 2011, 11:44 AM
I am not offended and nothing was stirred up. I simply speak for myself.
You spoke for yourself and I did not think you were suggesting anything about myself.
As for the passage in Thessalonians; I respect Paul's experiences and his wisdom. However, his admonishments are something that I approach with a take what you like and leave the rest attitude. Paul is not my God nor my conduit to him. I can certainly appreciate the shrewdness in abstaining from "all appearances" but it leads me to a slippery slope of being concerned with everyone else's perception. To some degree, no matter what I might do, it would have the appearance of evil to some person somewhere. That leaves me with an imperative of discernment based on guidance received from God. My celebration of the Halloween holiday does not lead me to participate in that which appears evil to myself or those closest to me.
I do honor the idea that I should not engage in behavior that would lead a brother to stumble (another of Paul's admonishments) and therefore strive to not engage in behavior that I cannot reconcile with my faith and therefore my testimony. To a large extent, what other people think of me isn't much of my business.
If you can provide some red letters that directly coincide with Paul's admonishments I might be swayed to give those more weight.

Many Christians (rightly so) lament the fact that Christmas has been secularized and watered down to the point that it has all but lost it's true meaning. Then they turn around and wail that Halloween is promoting Satanism and that we should boycott trick-or-treating and have a "Halleluja Party" instead to call attention to the Satanic origins of Halloween. Don't they realize that they are giving Satan more free advertizing than he could buy.

Pfft. Christmas is a pagan holiday to begin with. Most Christians don't even know that.
I celebrate Christmas and Hallowe'en for the fun of it, but not for Spiritual purposes.
Admittedly, I focus on the birth of Christ more around that time due to the popular perception that Christmas was the time of Christ's birth, but I celebrate Christ all year long.
As far as hallowe'en goes, I have disarmed it completely by exposing it's origins to my kids, so it's just a free-candy-fest to them, and they are thankful to God for the food.
I personally am not looking for anyones approval either.

I don't think Halloween has any evil to it. Just like the day of the dead in Mexico . Praying for souls lost in pugatory and the souls that have left us, ( and I don't beleive in purgatory either as I am not of the Catholic faith)
Halloween is also thought to have been heavily influenced by the Christian holy days of All Saints' Day (also known as Hallowmas, All Hallows, and Hallowtide) and All Souls' Day.[13] Falling on November 1st and 2nd respectively, collectively they were a time for honoring the Saints and praying for the recently departed who had yet to reach heaven. By the end of the 12th century they had become days of holy obligation across Europe and involved such traditions as ringing bells for the souls in purgatory and "souling", the custom of baking bread or soul cakes for "all crysten [ christened ] souls".[14] It was traditionally believed that the souls of the departed wandered the earth until All Saints Day, and All Hallow's Eve provided one last chance for the dead to gain vengeance on their enemies before moving onto the next world.[15] To avoid being recognised by a soul, Christians would wear masques and costumes to disguise themselves, following the lighted candles set by others to guide their travel for worship the next day.[15] Today, this practice has been perpetuated through trick-or-treating.[15]

This was a interesting read.....
The Bible does not tell us when Jesus was born. However, we know that the angels announced the birth of Christ to the Bethlehem shepherds in the open fields who were tending their flocks by night.. This fact certainly implies that the birth of Jesus could NOT have been on the 25th of December. "The cold of the night in Palestine between December and February is very piercing, and it was not customary for the shepherds of Judea to watch their flocks in the open fields later than about the end of October." Hislop, A., The Two Babylons, Loiseaux Brothers, Neptune, N.J. pg 91.
In addition, Jesus Himself said, in speaking of the coming destruction of Jerusalem,
"But pray that your flight be NOT in winter, neither on the Sabbathday."
Matt 24:20
Obviously, Jesus understood that the wintertime in Palestine was harsh enough to make traveling difficult and uncomfortable. If the winter was such a bad time in which to flee, it seems unlikely that the shepherds would be sleeping out in the fields while tending their sheep during that season.
Because of these facts, and others to be discussed, it is virtually impossible for the birth of Christ to have occurred on December 25.
"No such festival as Christmas was ever heard of until the THIRD century, and not until the FOURTH century was far advanced did it gain much observance.
"Long before the fourth century, and long before the Christian era itself, a festival was celebrated among the HEATHEN, at that precise time of the year, in honor oft the birth of the son of the Babylonian queen of heaven; and it may fairly be presumed that, in order to conciliate the heathen, and to swell the number of the nominal adherents of Christianity, the same festival was adopted by the Roman Church, giving it only the name of Christ. This tendency on the part of Christians to meet Paganism half-way was very early developed." Ibid, pg 93
