Autochthon (from Greek αὐτόχθων "indigenous", from αὐτο− "self, same" -χθων "earth, soil"), or the anglicized adjective autochthonous or abstract noun autochthony may refer to:

* The indigenous peoples of a place
o Autochthonous language, the language of an indigenous people
o Autochtoon, a term in Dutch: a citizen of the Netherlands or Flanders whose parents were (both) born in the Netherlands or Flanders, as opposed to an allochtoon, any persons of whom one or both parents was not born in the Netherlands or Flanders.
o political indigenism, basing an ideology of the a groups notion of being "autochthonous" to their homeland

1640s, "one sprung from the soil he inhabits" (pl. autochthones), from Gk. autokhthon "aborigines, natives," lit. "sprung from the land itself," used of the Athenians and others who claimed descent from the Pelasgians, from auto- "self" (see auto-) + khthon "land, earth, soil" (see chthonic).
