My grandfather refused to use any other spoon. They didn't have a lot of money and had a stainless steel flatware set for the house. My grandad kept a silver (sterling) spoon in his pocket. Rinsed it off after every meal and put it back in his pocket next to his lighter and his smokes. He said food didnt taste the same off of another spoon. Everyone knew it was grandpa's spoon...I thought it was wierd when I was a kid, no one ever told me anything about silver. I understand why he did it now...
As far as I know that was the only silver my grandparents had (they sold all theirs in 1980's during the huge spike...)
We use a silver plated set for everyday use at the house, its getting worn at the edges and you can see the base metal showing through the edges but it was my wife's great-grandmothers set that she used at the end of her life. Still getting use...we found it in a closet when we were helping her grandparents move and she told us to throw it away...we took it and replaced ours with it. It might just be placebo effect but I think things taste different off of that silver(plated)ware.
We also use some silver goblets (Thanks to Solid for turning me on to those) and I think water and applecider taste different out of those too

I use a Berkey to filter the well water. From there it goes into a Ball blue quart jar that sits on the north pole of a 4,000 gauss magnet. Inside the Ball jar is a 1 oz .999 silver ingot. This water also gets dosed with trace minerals, liquid kelp and a dropper full of blue solar water.
Might as well cover all bases.

a few times i have seen silver-plated silver ware for 25 cents each at garage sales.
if they're asking more, it should be a complete set, preferably with the box etc. of course then you're competing against people who just like silver - know any of them ;) - and are willing to pay way more than the silver price for some good-looking silver-ware.
it's very difficult to extract the silver, at least that's the consensus in the refining community.
i did the calc's a few months ago, with silver at $35 to $40, a silver-plated object with .001 inch plating (that's good and thick, typical of an older truly antique silver-plated item), it comes to about 30 cents per square inch.
i use silver in my kitchen, and have an occasional ;) shortfall in the dishwashing department.
i wonder if the silver-plating has an antibiotic effect ... to make up for dishwashing laziness.
maybe i should start using silver-plated dishes & cups too.

Silver plating has the same antibiotic effects as sterling silver, and also will not conduct hot/cold to the hand as fast.
