SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Copper thieves have struck at Abraham Lincoln's burial site in Springfield, Ill.
An employee recently noticed that a copper statue atop the tomb was missing a 3-foot-long sword. The statue is of a Civil War artillery officer.
The sword was allegedly taken sometime between September and early November. It was broken at the handle.
Dave Blanchette is spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency. He tells the (Springfield) State Journal-Register (http://bit.ly/sxWgJm ) that the theft is believed to be the first to state property stolen at the Lincoln Tomb Historic Site since the same sword was stolen more than a century ago.
State officials plan to repair the statue.
A guard used to be stationed at the tomb overnight, but Blanchette says the position was cut amid budget problems.

Well you could have the Skull and Bones clowns do their sanctioned grave robberies instead.
I would rather have it go to people that need the money.

Stricter copper laws
State Rep. Mike Unes, R-East Peoria, held a news conference at the tomb Monday to publicize legislation designed to crack down on copper thefts statewide.
Unes said the Lincoln’s Tomb theft was the breaking point.
“These thefts are causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage for only a few dollars in scrap metal,” Unes said. “We have to do something.”
Unes’ proposal, HB3825 (http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/BillStatus.asp?DocNum=3825&GAID=11&DocTypeID=HB&LegId=62102&SessionID=84&GA=97), would impose harsher penalties for thieves convicted of stealing copper, eliminate cash payments for people who bring in precious metals and require scrap-metal dealers to keep better paper trails of transactions.
The proposal probably won’t be considered before lawmakers return to Springfield in January, he said.
In Sangamon County, identical laws approved by both the county board and Springfield aldermen this year require scrap-metal operators to keep detailed records of every sale, including a seller's driver's license number, description of materials, the amount paid and the

So Skull and Bones goes and steal Lincolns sword, and thus that will ensure that everyone who until now avoids the inflation tax, by keeping their meager savings in PM's, gets taxed for their 'gain'!
