Many consumers have no idea that there is no law stating stores need the zip code to complete credit transactions and they are not obligated to comply with such requests, he said. A retailer can request an ID to complete a credit purchase, but it is illegal to record any information from the ID. “People just do it uniformly,”

Retailers often run a reverse check on the shopper to obtain their address information, and then proceed to send them marketing information, according to Valdes. These mailing lists are often duplicated and sold to other retailers.

I don't even get to the point of making excuses, or false info. I just say no thanks, or I'd rather not. If I get attitude or pressure, I just ask for a manager.

I f-ing loathe when cashiers assume they can leech personal info from you.

Pay in cash, multiple problems solved.

Sometimes cash is the problem, as they don't have a debit record linked to a card, so they try to compensate with additional info.

I might say "I am close to but not in (zip)" or "My postal mailing code is CF (ZIP) CF" where CF stands for CONSTRUCTIVE FRAUD. I also might say "I have no zip code .. they are government property" or "I am zip code exempt."

Most people give their zip code with no problem, after their little key ring customer card and CC/debit have been scanned.
