View Full Version : Revolver exploded at the range today

At the range today doing some shooting with friends, some guy a few lanes down had his revolver explode on him while trying to shoot a round. Fortunately nobody got hurt but the blast from the round blew the frame right off the top of the gun and two pieces of the steel frame shot up into the ceiling above the shooting area. We recovered a few more pieces of the frame around the area and like I said, it's amazing that nobody got hurt, that sort of shrapnel could kill you! I asked if I could take some photos and he said yes, can you imagine having a revolver explode in your hand like this?!?

Dam!
Was the barrel clear? That would do it.
Was he shooting reloads? Something gave that gun a case of major constipation.

My first thought, was he shooting hot loads?
Either way, an exploding pistol would absolutely suck.

Dude was reloading and likley double charged a load. Could happen totaly by accident if he got lazy on the reloader and didnt check his ammo. Or he tried to hot load something on purpose, but those pics are a text book example of double charging a case.

shooting +Ps in a cheap-o RG again huh? ::)
"
R.G. Industries was an importer who imported cheap revolvers made by Rohm Gmbh of Sontheim/Brenz Germany.
They went out of business in 1986.
As you discerned, the RG guns were "bottom-of-the-line" cheap handguns.
These were both double action and single action revolvers in calibers ranging from .22lr to .357 and .44 Magnum.
They also sold a .25 Cal auto.
About the best that can be said about them is, they were better than no gun at all (most of the time)."

Now if this revolver exploded. There would be some collateral damage.

After reviewing the photos I see now that it was in fact a RG revolver. Only incompetent morons own RGs, and incompetent morons are subject to loading a RG with +P rounds. KA-BOOM!!!

why in the world would I want to give up my glock factory, tennifer coated, polygonal rifled barrel for?
KB's are not only a thing of the older generations, but are over hyped and only a fraction of a fraction of occurances over the largest produced pistol by a single manufactuer. Not only are there literaly MILLIONS of Glocks out there, there are MILLIONS in service every single day, some being shot every single day. If you reload, you may consider the aftermarket barrel, especialy if you shoot lead, but I have no fear of a KB with my glock.

I agree
Most of the incidents occured with reloads or some after market part.
Very few with all factory componets.
all though I do realize that nothing is 100% safe

Very probably, a bunch of pistol powder charges fill only a small portion of the case and there is plenty of room for a double charge, especially if using a fast powder. That can't happen with my rifle loads because a good load will fill the case close to the top. It wasn't an obstructed barrel because the rupture was in the cylinder; it would have been in the barrel if it had been obstructed. Rupture the cylinder and blow the top strap, clearly over pressure.

Franks, was on a range years ago, dialing in some loads, and a guy on a bench near me, had his rifle blow. It seems he had a squib load and for what ever reason he did not check the barrel. So he proceeds to fire another round and the barrel blew. His left hand needed stitches. Not sure of anymore damage, never saw the guy again at that range. I did not know him, fact first time on our range, but not sure if he was a member or a guest. Not sure of the caliber but it was a large one, .308 or larger.
Shit happens , even when careful, but for a dam fact more so if not !
No pictures, cell phones did not have cameras in those days, were more like bricks.

Being a RG the JB Weld will be stronger than the metal itself.

I have loaded rounds , the only explanation is the basterds explode in flight!
Scarry hot loads, but not showing signes of over pressure in the gun!
Ether the spin tear's then apart, or the dam things melted going down range?
Poof gone!
