I've never been much of one for holidays, but Thanksgiving (with its omnipresent social message of staying at home with family, gluttony, and drunkenness) has always been a bit of an exception for me - it's a celebration I find that I can really get into! ;D

However, that doesn't mean that I do the "traditional" thing... no turkey, cranberries, yams, football, etc. around here!

My thanksgiving consists of taking MOST of the day off from work, starting on the swill beer at 2:00 P.M. instead of the usual 6:00 (or after work is finished, whichever comes later!). I like to watch a movie or two (today's selections, fresh from the library, include "Control" - the Joy Division biopic [just finished it, quite moving!], and "Priest" - some kind of ridiculous hollywood vampire shoot-em-up... just starting it).

I'll follow that up around sunset with a meal consisting of pepper-encrusted new york strips grilled to medium-rare, a nice bottle of Bordeaux wine, grilled potatoes with a 55-gallon drum of butter and sour cream, a green salad with balsamic mandarin dressing, and near-frozen coconut cream pie for desert. Yum! ;)

Anyone else do thanksgiving a bit "different"?

I too would rather avoid the traditional turkey day spiel, it's almost distasteful to me watching people gorge themselves to the point of misery and then go do it again, for whatever reason they do it I have never been able to figure it out. I just know I'd rather not participate if that's the case and in a strange way today for me the conventional is the unconventional. So, I've got a hearty 7 bone roast w/ carrots, taters and onions in the oven now and a cold one at hand along with the additional attitude adjustment. I finally found my guitar tuner and will spend the night playing and possibly writing...the muse calls.

That's not to say I don't observe the day and much like Christmas and NY I simply observe it differently. I am very, very thankful, for a great many things and I am each and every day, not just today because I'm "supposed" to. Today though, I do take a little extra care in reflecting on all the things I appreciate, both small and large.

I appreciate you all and I'm thankful that there are those of us of like mind to commiserate with and for a place that allows us to do so. Thank You GSUS.

I do whatever it takes to avoid spectator sports. I have learned not to answer the phone in the days preceding Thanksgiving.

I fed all my animals in the morning then started drinking beer at 10am. Fried up some wild turkey breast that had been seasoned with sage, then coated with fryin magic. I fried it in a cast iron skillet with coconut oil, made some stove top stuffing, opened a can of cranberries. Drank more beer and feasted. Listened to some videos by Brian Gerrish Patcolo had posted then took a good long nap. Drinking more beer now and haven't seen a single person all day. Life is good;D

I love the getting together over a big feast and stuffing my face full with friends and family and I dont even really like my family.

I am pretty sick of freaking turkey, stuffing and green bean casserole, probably because we cook those things during hte rest of the year as well. Unfortunatley we always go to relatives house and not only do they suck at cooking, they always cook the same shit.

I think next eyar well do our own and it will have steak and lobster and a clam bake, no turkey or stuffing in sight!

Anyone else do thanksgiving a bit "different"?

i winterized the chicken coop (put a liner on the roof, etc.) and removed a monster poison oak plant.

or, started removing it, it might take a few days.

never done that before on a Thanksgiving !

the most garden-y thing i'd done before on a Thanksgiving was to build a compost pile.

but i still like turkey with dressing, roasting marshmallows, etc. ! ;)

One year I picked up a friend to do some early morning fishing before the family gig and he and I ended up skipping out 'cause the fish kept biting the beer was cold and the family/his in-laws were bitching. Good times and good company.

Reading this thread made me hungry again thanks for left overs.lol

Nope, I do the traditional, turkey, stuffing, gravy, bread rolls, cranberry, pumkin pie. I don't want any of the other stuff !

It was a GREAT day with the normal side of the family, will see the disfunctional side tomorrow.:)

Sorry there OHL, But most of the "redneck" women I see don't look anything like the Honeys in that vid lol. 90% of them that Ive seen all tip the scales abt 280-350+, Sporting broken down flip flops, Tank tops, and the proverbial Muffin top, Tramp stamp, with thong Highly visible due to the fact that their spandex shorts are about 2 sizes too small..;D
