In an unexpected turn of events, the Kansas governor who was the subject of a disparaging tweet is apologizing to the teen who sent the message.
In a statement Monday, Gov. Sam Brownback acknowledged 18-year-old Emma Sullivan's rights: (https://www.facebook.com/notes/governor-sam-brownback/governor-brownback-makes-statement-regarding-student-tweet/264960023553569)
"My staff over-reacted to this tweet, and for that I apologize. Freedom of speech is among our most treasured freedoms. I enjoyed speaking to the more than 100 students who participated in the Youth in Government Program at the Kansas Capitol. They are our future. I also want to thank the thousands of Kansas educators who remind us daily of our liberties, as well as the values of civility and decorum. Again, I apologize for our over-reaction."Sullivan, a senior at Shawnee Mission East High School in Kansas, was on a field trip to the state capitol last week and listened to a speech by Brownback (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/27/emma-sullivan-sam-brownback-kansas-tweet_n_1115006.html?ref=education%3Cbr%20/%3E). During Brownback's remarks, the teen tweeted,

"Just made mean comments at gov brownback and told him he sucked, in person #heblowsalot." Brownback's office flagged the tweet and forwarded the information to the Youth in Government program and her school.

Although Sullivan later admitted she didn't actually make the direct comment to the governor, her school principal Karl R. Krawitz demanded that she submit to Brownback a letter of apology.

The governor also subsequently received hundreds of upset comments (https://www.facebook.com/govsambrownback?sk=wall) on his Thanksgiving Facebook message.

Although the teen initially agreed to write the letter to "get it out of the way" (http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/kansas-teen-won-t-apologize-gov-brownback-over-145218154.html) and not have more to handle amid her college applications, according to Yahoo! News, she later changed her mind and refused to submit the note, saying she "would do it again," (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/27/emma-sullivan-apology-sam-brownback-tweet_n_1115382.html) the Associated Press reports.

The Shawnee Mission School District has also retracted its punishment for Sullivan (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/28/emma-sullivan-kansas-high_n_1116674.html).

YOU seem to be the only one bringing the bible into the topic. Your hate for those who find truth in the Bible is clear. You should be proud of your leader Baraqula. BTW- I think this is a public school.

Good call. I mean I have no respect for people who lie for the purpose of gaining "rep" or "respect", any to benefit in any way.

She said "I told him he sucked to his face" to her friends to be cool, then later on admitted that she never said anything like that to his face, but not before saying "She would do it again".

Drama-teen looking for respect from her peers for having a big mouth.

I'm not justifying the behaviour of the PTB involved in the situation. Just saying she's a lying POS.

:rolleyes:I loathe hypocrisy, Spectrism. And fervent, bible belt hypocrisy practictioners in particular.

A Colloquialistic reference to the midwest as the bible belt does not make me a Bible Hater. How absurd.

You really had to dig deep to come up with that epithet, Spec-O.

Give it a few years she will then be labled a "terrorist" and imprisoned in a gulag, or a drone will visit her house.

Freedom of speech is no longer free.
