Oldest Holocaust survivor turns 108

(JTA) -- Alice Herz-Sommer, the oldest known survivor of the Holocaust, celebrated her 108th birthday.


Herz-Sommer, a native of Prague, marked her birthday in London on Nov. 25.
She was a professional pianist in her mid-teens. Herz-Sommer, her husband and young son were sent to the Nazi show camp at Terezin in 1943, where she played more than 150 concerts as Jews were sent to their deaths and for visitors from the Red Cross.


Herz-Sommer's husband, also a musician, did not survive the war, but their son, Raphael, who also took part in performances at Terezin, did.



Herz-Sommer swam daily until the age of 97, and continues to play her piano every day, according to reports. She also enjoys playing Scrabble.

Not to sound insensitive, and wondering in the back of my mind if the Nazis managed to kill anyone in the notorious "death" camps, this story sounds like the perfect premise for a Monty Python dark comedy.

i've been to several death camps. the "ovens" are laughable. you'd be lucky to have burnt 600,000 bodies in them over the course of the war, let alone 6 million. anyone who has stood in front of them and actually looked at them has a WTF moment instantly in regards to this whole "big chimneys of death" holocaust story. the camps in real life are nothing like they are in movies. they're tiny and frail looking. part of dachau has a fence that kept people in that's literally 2 strands of barbed wire.

one of the accounts i've read states that 750 people were fit into an area 15 by 15 feet square. (225 square feet).

the 6 million Holohoax is a form of child abuse. forcing American children to contemplate a disaster that never happened.

60 to 100 million people died during WW2. with a casualty count of 1200K (200K in Germany + 1 million in Russia), or 1600K (600K in Germany + 1 million in Russia), at most 2% of the casualties of WW2 were Jewish - their approximate distribution in the general population.

at dachau, there's part of the tour by the ovens where there is a shower room. they take everyone on the tour and herd you all in to the room, then they shut the door and turn off the light. then they tell you "this is the point at which you would be gassed." then about 1/2 an hour later on the tour, they tell you about how "nobody was ever gassed at dachau, it wasn't an extermination camp." i asked the tour guy why did they do the whole gassing us us in the shower room thing if it never happened there then, and he told me it was so that people just had a general idea of what it was like. i was like, WTF, you just made that whole part up about dachau?

there's also whole big piles of shoes, glasses, etc. on display that were confiscated from the victims before they were gassed, even though they admit that nobody was ever gassed there. i asked about that too, i was told all of that stuff came from some other camps. the footage shown on the movie in the visitors center is mostly from auschwitz. by the end i was like WTF actually happened at dachau then, since all of the props and scripts were from other camps?
