A company director killed himself during an internet video call with his partner 7,000 miles away.
Adrian Rowland, 53, was working in India when he is believed to have taken his own life on camera while talking to Julie Zalinski back home in England.
In a desperate bid to alert the authorities there, she dialled 999.
But Indian medics who tracked down the room where he was staying found him in a pool of blood with a knife nearby, and he was later pronounced dead.
Yesterday Miss Zalinski was being comforted by relatives, as were Mr Rowland’s ex-wife and his three children.
Friends said they believed the businessman – a former factory manager for Formula One racing team Jordan – had been having difficulties in his long-distance relationship with Miss Zalinski.
On a social networking site he had recently posted: ‘Been in India tooooo long!’
A friend said: ‘I have heard that they were having a discussion about their future together when he suddenly produced a knife and killed himself in front of her as she watched him over the Skype camera.
‘It must have been the most horrendous thing imaginable. She was 7,000 miles away in the UK, unable to do anything to help him. It’s just terrible.’
Police confirmed they had gone to an address in Reading shortly before midday on Sunday following a call from Miss Zalinski.

‘There was a concern for welfare and we sent officers to assist the caller and to try to contact authorities in India,’ said a spokesman.
‘Officers then obtained information that could be passed on to the Indian authorities via the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and provide reassurance to the woman who made the report to us.

‘The man was traced but regrettably was later pronounced dead by doctors in India.’ Mr Rowland had been working abroad for Adwest Engineering, a subsidiary of Magal Engineering, based in Woodley, Berkshire.
He is understood to have been developing new business opportunities for the firm which specialises in ‘guiding clients through lean business transformation’.

On the company’s website he described himself as an experienced managing director who had project-managed more than 15 business transformations.
He listed his activities as gym and work and described his interests as keeping fit and playing the guitar.
Yesterday Jenny Rocket, PA to company chief executive Gamil Magal, said: ‘This is strictly a family matter and we won’t be saying anything further.’
Last night Mr Rowland’s body was still in India, awaiting inquiries by the authorities on the sub-continent.
