UPPER ST. CLAIR, Pa. -- Authorities continue to search for nearly $200,000 that blew out of an armored van that was transporting the cash in Upper St. Clair on Wednesday.
Investigators said the money was being shipped to the West View Savings Bank when a door on the van somehow opened.
Drivers of the Fidelity Courier Services van said they were alerted by a passing motorist that bags of money were falling from the rear door of the vehicle as it traveled southbound on Route 19.
Investigators said some of the cash was recovered by couriers who returned to the scene, but plastic bags containing "well into six figures" worth of cash is still missing. Police said if those who found the cash fail to come forward in a reasonable amount of time, they could be charged with theft.
One witness, who returned $60 to police, told Channel 11 News about what he saw.
“You're talking about 300 yards where I turned around, and money was all over the street,” said Michael Evans. “By the time I turned around, most of that money was already gone. It's pretty amazing to begin with. Cars were stopping. People were everywhere."
Upper St. Clair police said several people who witnessed what happened have called their station.
"Little by little we are developing some leads," said Upper St. Clair police Lt. James Englert. "We have been getting a number of phone calls and people stopping by the station."
After talking to several witnesses police said they're trying to find two men in their 20s who were in a white truck, men who were driving a black truck and a heavy-set man driving a red BMW.
Police said the descriptions came from witnesses who were nearby when the incident happened. Police said so far, only two people have come forward.
Investigators said they don’t believe the courier workers had anything to do with the incident and the company is working to determine if the door malfunctioned.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Upper St. Clair Police Department at 412-833-7500. Fidelity Courier of Sharon has offered a reward for the missing money.
