Actually, it is much more simple than that.

I watched it one day a certain period of time, and it switched directions. It just changed directions after a while. Then changes back.

EDIT - OK I was wrong. I just watched it for a good amount of time and realized that it does work.

No, it's real. And with practice you can make it change directions at will. The reason it appeared random is because you blinked at just the right time, or glanced away and back and it had changed directions.

I've played with it some, and it seems that if you disrupt your view (blink, glance away quickly) when the toe is completely extended, you can force a direction change.

I have no idea how practical this test is other than proving the mind can play tricks on what the eyes are seeing, but I suspect it will aid in accurately identifying zombies when the need arises. ;D
