Personally, I'd go with a Toyota FJ. I test drove one once and was impressed. The only thing I didn't like was the windows and blind spots while backing up. A coworker of mine owns one and loves it.

If you are serious, and came to Dooom with a Hummer, none of us would care, we'd just be happy to see you. :)
On a serious note, around here, Hummer's make no sense and people just drive them to attract attention. If you are seriously considering one, think about what you are going to be using it for. Off road, bug out vehicle? There are better options than that, imo, and then, you wouldn't want to attract attention to yourself. Hummer's general send the message of lot's of money being the flashy impractical vehicles they are.
But, test drive one, read some reviews. If you like it, life's short, who cares and get what you want. My two bits.

I haven't read all the replies so forgive me if this has all been covered.
The H2 is nothing but a Tahoe with different body panels, and interior. So if this kind of vehicle is for SHTF I couldn't justify paying the extra price for that over a Z71 Tahoe.
The H1 is obviously a completely different story and I've kicked around that idea myself, although it's width is the biggest downside that I can see.
As far as SUV's for SHTF I would say Z71 Tahoe, a ton of aftermarket parts for the car and the engine and they are a dime a dozen. Ideally I think diesel would be preferable to gas for any SHTF vehicle but off the top of my head I can't think of any diesel powered SUV's that are sold in America.
If it were me and I lived where you did I'd shoot down to Mexico and buy a diesel 4x4 Hilux, 35mpg on a tough ass truck.

I know, the shittiest thing is that in other countries the diesel is the cheaper option (typically) whereas here for most 3/4 or 1 ton trucks diesels are at LEAST 6000 more than the gas version.
If I could get a crew cab 4x4 diesel hilux I'd trade my tundra for it tomorrow, even though my Tundra looks 10x better and would be way faster and pull way more and a ton more room, I'd still take the hilux.

Ok ee, my 2 cents, over the years, we have had lots of cars and trucks,a Dodge dually that sounded like a jet engine taking off , that was a good one, traded it in it had an electrical problem, the 2 fords f-250 and 350, both still going one with the new engine the other with 80,000 miles on it, the Nissian Titian, I only like it cause its pretty, bought it brand new in 2004 and only 1 problem the starter but that was cause of mice.
The most reliable were the diesels, good mileage and almost no problems. ( maybe you got to chip em though if they are to low geared?)
If I were going to go out and buy a brand new truck, I would buy a diesel. But If I were to buy a car/suv I would go with another toyota/ suv.
Oh and @ Solid we bought a brand new toyota T-100 4x4 it was ok but they musta made the bed outta 28 gauge metal it would dent if you touched it, and a gas hog and was low geared. Good little 4x4though, I parked it and there it sits.

7th December 2011, 08:34 PM
New vehicles are crap. Most diesels in pickups are junk, possible exceptions some older 7.3 Fords and 6 cyl Cummins in Dodges. Gasoline engines are quieter and easier to start in the winter. Find an older ford or Chevy in good condition or get a Toyota. Old Jeep Cherokees (not Grand Cherokee) gave a lot of bang for the buck, but this is for people on a budget.
Whatever you do, don't get anything with low profile tires.

There are a lot of Jimmies, FourRunners, Suburbans, etc, and they are all capable of getting through almost anything with the right suspention and tires.
A lot cheaper than a hummer too, and I would suspect more rugged.

I am with K-os and General on this. If I had the cash I would own a bobbed deuce with no electronics.
Deuces ate massive but they are not big if that makes sense.
My fullsize Deuce is 4 inches longer than my Dodge Ram 2500 with an 8' bed.
A bobbed deuce is the footprint of a Toyota Tacoma.

Get something with solid axles front and back. They ride rougher but are tougher...Even the lighter 10/12 bolt chev's and Dana 44's can be significantly increased in strength with good axle/gear components and a good limited slip (Eaton) or locker (Detroit). Install a doubler on the transfer case and have an ultra low geared crawler for the really tough stuff.
A Gen 1 Blazer makes an extremely capable off roader as it is smaller and lighter than subsequent models, but still has way more room than a Jeep. My 72 weighs ~3200lbs with the soft top, which is very light for a full size 4x4. Install a 4" lift, some 33" mud terrain tires, Detroit locker in the rear and an Eaton limited slip in the front and you will pretty much be able to go anywhere that 4 wheel drive vehicles can sanely go.

+1 on the no computer control system. With the old school , points and condenser systems they require much more attention and do need to have a reliable supply of parts , rotor, cap, points and condenser. But if there ever is a emp event, you will still be driving it.
No brainer.
And can burn a mutilple of fuels from used motor oil to gasoline.

I have a 109A3 which is the standard Deuce with a 9x12 shop box on the back it is undergoing turbo upgrades and camper conversion right now because everybody needs a 6x6 Winnabago.
And lots of people run them on used motor oil with 25% gasoline blended in to thin it for cold areas and easy starting.

I've got a M51 5 ton with the old 602 Continental gas engine. Real nice truck except for the engine. I'd like to put in a diesel (3208/3308 are a dime a dozen) or multifuel. Do you happen to know if the later multifuel engines bolted right up to the frame and bellhousing of the older truck?
Does the dirt in the oil cause premature wear on the injectors?

To the first question I would go over to Steel Soldiers and ask. I am not an expert on that they are the source for all that knowledge.
for used motoroil use you filter out the chunkies by either using filter socks or a centerfuge the Multifuel engine has 3 huge fuel filters as well. there are people in warmer climates using 100% WMO (waste motor oil) the big thing for people that colect WMO is most places also dump things like antifreeze in the tank so you got to get rid of that by using heat or a centerfuge if you know where you are getting the WMO and it is not water infused it is not a big deal.
I get 10MPG in my 109 and that was from Huntsville AL to near Seattle WA. on the mother of all first new truck drives. I have also hepled a friend buy one from FT Rilley KS and drive it back that one got 9mpg but some one had turned up the fuel because it had a hell of a lot more power, we just ran out of RPM multifuels need to stay below 2500 rpm.

I think dancing girls should be considered an important prep. A survival mood enhancing necessity. We don't give dancing girls enough credit, imo.
This is where the Hummer wins, hands down. If you can bring your guns, cans of beans, and dancing girls to your bug out location. Life is great.
Hey, the girls are happy on the hood or roof of a hummer, you won't even know they are there! :)

A few notes on large tires and suspension lifts:
Large tires can help you float across soft sand and bottomless mud, but are detrimental in all other types of terrain. They strain your steering and suspension systems decrease fuel economy and make a lot of noise. Personally, I prefer the tallest tire I can get on stock rims. Go for height, not width. Of course you can't get very tall tires on stock rims without exceeding the minimum rim width for a tire and you don't want to do that. What I mean is you can replace a tire with an aspect ratio of 70 with one that has an aspect ratio of 75.
I never install suspension lifts because they increase the driveshaft angle. U-joints should not have to compensate for more than 7 degrees of driveshaft angle. Tall jacked up 4x4's break down a lot because of this.
Another thing to consider before buying taller tires is that you may want to use snow chains sometime and this will drastically reduce fender clearance.
Jacking up a 4x4 is detrimental to the center of gravity. Although ground clearance is great, you may be driving on steep terrain and tip over.
The ideal 4x4 is one that was designed without a lot of fragile conponents like parking brake cables, shock hangars and steering rods hanging low. Installing tires 2" taller than you have will only increase ground clearance 1".
I prefer steel wheels over alloy. They cost less and are generally stronger. Off road driving is hard on wheels and tires, you will be replacing a wheel now and then so keep them stock and keep a couple spares.
Forget about paying extra for "pretty" and shiny 4x4's. A go-anywhere vehicle will be getting scratched up and muddy.

Truth, in all said. We all see shiny 4x4's all jacked and binged up as street eye candy street whores that almost never see dirt and mud and the owner would fall over dead with a heart attack, if their "Toy" got a scratch in the paint.
Horders post nailed it, but I would go at least one step more! Most skid plates that come stock on 4x4's I have never liked or cared for and the trucks that I have had in the past I replaced the stock ones, (flimsy) with ones I would make out of 1/4" steel plate And also redo all of the bracing pads by beefing them up. One truck, I even made a drive shaft cage/tunnel to protect it from damage.
I would take a beat up 4x4 over a street binged one any day. (nobody likes that first dent or scratch, but dammit its a truck, and trucks do not have personality until they get a tad beat up. ;D ) Scratches and dents are badges of honor and proof of doing the job!
