View Full Version : go to company Christmas party or not?

I hate to be looked at as an ungreatful social outcast at my work, but this kinda stuff just doesn't do anything for me.
Every year the company takes us out for dinner and free drinks at a decent restaurant. I get along pretty good with all the people I work with. Going out late listening to drunk people blab about shit I don't really care much about is painful. I like the odd beer but don't really drink much anymore. So the open bar isn't a huge deal like it used to be. I won't be out of the place untill probably 10pm, and that will make the 5am wake up call for fishing the next morning painful.

I have been to some for companies that were absolute snake pits to work in. In some cases you might have a valid excuse for not being available. Depending on the company size, you may be noticed as absent. In most cases, I would suggest showing up and being cordial.... and having a reason to leave after the core event.

Fishing is a good excuse to leave early.

Don't be a pooper. Go for the dinner, duck out after a beer. (or 10)

I would have a hard time refusing free food, even if it is restaurant food...
It would also depend on what's on tap. I say go, eat, and make a break for the door once people are intoxicated enough to not really notice.

Go. Somebody will take it the wrong way if you don't.

If you have an asperations of moving up you probably should go.
I hate going to our christmas parties too, but my boss gets really drunk and definately notices those who don't show up...they aren't there for him to make fun of/be an ass to. I go just so I can look like I am a team player (I am, but I don't give a shit).
I use my daughter (14 months) as an excuse to get out of everything I don't want to do...

That kind of stuff depends on how far up you are in the corporate food chain. The higher up you are, the deeper you are into the company's ecosystem/culture. So to go and be seen is on a sliding scale (sort of) the higher you are on the scale in importance and or popularity, the more it is expected politically for you to go and be seen. The lower you are on the food chain, the less you will be noticed and or expected to show up.
Unfortunately, these kind of get togethers are important, for those that want to advance their careers, in what ever company one works for. If you hold a very visible/important job.

I'm lucky enough to work for a company of individuals with whom I enjoy spending some free time with to socialize outside the office. Also, my company is prudent enough to not have spent the money on a Christmas party for the past 3 or so years and instead opted to divide the same amount of cash as Christmas gifts to the employees. The parties are not cheap; our smallish company of then ~100 people ran up a $15,000 tab. That money is nice to have in the pocket at the end of the year. In better times we got the party and some profit sharing that easily superseded the Christmas party amount. Today, we are just happy to be staying on the black and having a little extra to spread around.

Go there drink as much as you can, sexually molest the female staff, insult the bosses wife dress and mistake his tie for a napkin, 'accidentally' put the curtains on fire, while lighting the cigar with a hundred dollar bill, projectile vomiting over the table and leave resisting violently at around 9PM, wake up refreshed at 5 am for fishing...

I'd Go, But take the wife (or a date?). Have it planned out ahead of time so That If things start to get stale ....Have it planned that The wife or whoever isn't feeling well and needs to leave early.

I would say go. Who knows, maybe next year they won't be able to meet payroll, let alone have a Christmas party...
Take advantage of the social aspect now, because soon those amicable social gatherings will be a thing of the past.
As for bowing out early, if you want to leave, find the boss, thank him, shake his hand, excuse yourself due to prior commitments, and go. no need to make up bullshit excuses.

Oh I know dude, I just can't make the time. It would take me a day or more of steady driving just to get where you are, and a day or more back! Don't forget Hunting season just ended, and I was away from my family a lot for that.

I love Christmas time...
For me, work is for WORK. There are a few fellas here that I have socialized with and we all enjoyed those times.
I just am not really interested in showing up as an assembled member of the larger "team" just so the fat cat can look over his minions to get his jollies.
No- I'm not going.
Besides- its in Austin and I'm in Houston.
Besides - I dont wanna get drunk and tell anybody where my stash is.

I'd rather be fishing than at a company Christmas party.
I used to dread them at my last place of employment. So stuffy and at places like the Ritz Carlton or The Breakers. Ugh. Good food, though. Some of the biggest prawns I have ever seen. Mmmm. Still, not worth the price of admission - small talk with people whom I didn't care to talk to at all.
. . . but maybe your company isn't that bad!

I organized Xmas parties at a couple of companies I worked at. Hospitals are the worst. My date's mother got clubbed in the face by a barstool thrown by a doctor who was trying to kill another doctor. We were never invited back to the Deerwood Club after the hospital Administrator pulled the deer head off the wall and ran around trying to gore hospital employees with it. After several years of such debacles, they wisely decided against the Open Bar Policy. That year we would issue Drink Tickets, 2 per employee. Fortunately, I had possession of the roll of 5000 Drink Tickets and nobody went thirsty.
Finally, they decided to stop having the party catered. Everyone could just bring their own. My department was in charge of transporting the Doctors' booze from the Board Room to the Xmas Party and back. All that weight made the van handle poorly, so we made a few stops along the way to offload some of the offending cargo.
The absolute worst year was the year I went sober. God, drunk people are so pathetically disgusting when you're not one of them!

Flyfishing is way....more important than a Christmas work party.
Look, the real party, is the workers who are friends and hit the pubs...not the official "work" party.
I say ditch the company "party". Don't even show up. Flyfishing is more important, get an early start and catch some big ones. The real Christmas party is with your coworkers, the one's you trust, who'll back you up. Go to that party, imo.
