On Buying Gold & Silver for Survival Preparedness
"But in reality it was hard to find someone who give you some food or battery or whatever useful for one coin. Gold coin was not useful for 90 percent of people, what they could use it for? Eat it? Start fire with that?"

My gold and silver protects my wealth. My preps and trading supplies are for SHTF........

According to published rules it takes a dispute of at least $20 to obtain a trial by jury. It takes at least $5 to protect yourself from a vagrancy charge. If you have nothing but preps you lose.

Does anyone know the average shelf life of canned coffee and/or cigarette cartons?

Does anyone know the average shelf life of canned coffee and/or cigarette cartons? If kep under vacuum pack, one would think for years. The cigarettes if kept like cigars (temp % humidity) could also last for years without vacuum packing.

and I've noticed that if you try to trade silver and gold, you tend to overpay versus cash.

From reading that fellow's posts on other forums I believe he is a moslim and shouldn't have been in Serbia in the first place.
That said, he contradicts himself.
He and his family were not prepared for anything in the beginning, no stored food, maybe one gun (pistol), so even the possibility of anything above subsistence was impossible.
One of the sheeple.

I bought some coffee sealed in plastic pouches at a dollar store awhile back. $1 each, smaller pouches that claim 50 servings. Thought they would be good for bartering. The expiration date is 'best' by Sept. 2013. Probably would be good for much longer.
I plan on keeping and storing the unroasted beans, and roasting them myself. Fresh coffee I plan on having, life just seems a little more colorful with a good cup of coffee.

Can't say how long they will last, but, I bought a bunch of Drum tobacco and rollies. Took a pouch and 1 book of rollies and vacuum sealed them together. Pretty sure if SHTF, if the tabac is a little dry or stale, it won't really matter to a nic fix addict.........

I have drank Canned coffee from a real #10 can not that fiber crap but rusty metal that was 25+ years old was it good? Considering the circumstances it was pure nectar poured down from heaven.
Tobaco also comes in metal cans. American Spirit, Top, Bugler and others. I think that this would be far superior to carton smokes for long term storage.

SHTF precious metals are for transactions of state, mob, ransom, land, etc. (macro)
The trading of preps are for family, friends, neighborhood (micro)

What got my attention are cigarettes. Even in the most problematic years of 1992-1995 there were never shortages of cigarettes and those were always cheap in Serbia at that time. Cigarettes sold at one piece. Give me a break.

i would say, if they're well protected from heat & moisture - almost forever.
i just finished off a jar of canned pickled beets that was dated 1986 - i got it at an estate sale this summer. i proceeded VERY slowly because of concern about botulism.
it may not taste good, but the coffee will still have caffeine, and the cigarettes will still have nicotine.
in a TSHTF/ barter situation, i doubt many people will say, "HEY ! this isn't Fresh !"
more likely they will open the bounty with shaking hands, make some coffee or light the cig, and lean back with a sigh of relief.
oh, and they should also be protected from - Marauding Squirrels. i had a squirrel eat up so much stuff in my semi-secure warehouse few years ago that it was comical ... it was like Terminator Squirrel. It drank a pint of Safer's insecticidal soap and then ate the plastic container for dessert.
once it or they realized that there was food in my stuff (well, actually, a seed collection of food & tree seeds - but to them it was food), they left very few containers untouched.
based on how they chewed through all the plastic containers, it left me wondering if Aluminum tool-boxes are enough to stop varmints. like, "Maybe you need steel".
I even set up a "catch em live" trap, because i wanted to meet the critter face to face. i was planning on catch-and-release, i just wanted to marvel at this Survival Machine.
but, it was too smart for that.
i was left wondering - maybe it's just a mouse. that would be comical too. but it's EFFECTS sure were impressive.

Seriously. The two absolute essentials craved by Homeless Shelter guests. Not food. Not clean clothing. Not a warm place to sleep. Not even booze.
Coffee and cigarettes.
