Back in may, I posted a thread (http://gold-silver.us/forum/showthread.php?48842-Open-sourced-blueprints-for-civilization) about an organization working to open source industrial equipment. The idea is that if about 50 basic tools are open sourced with explicit instructions on how to build them from the ground up, an individual or small community could produce the majority of materials it needed from nothing but energy and raw materials.
For example, one could build a tractor, cnc machine, circuit mill, saw mill, etc. Some of these machines could be used to build other machines. Things like microprocessors and hydraulic motors would have to be bought off the shelf, but those are well within reach.
The goal is to formally release all the information on these 50 or so machines within a couple years. On December 24th, they are going to have their first release: The civilization starter kit version 0.0.1. This will contain 3 fully released machines as well as 1 beta released machine. They are:
Compressed earth brick press (http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/CEB_Press) release
Soil pulverizer (http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Rototiller) release
Power cube (http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Power_Cube) release
Tractor (http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Tractor) beta release
Anyways, just giving an update. It's not turnkey yet I'm sure but something everyone should know about.
