The move comes a week after the Obama administration said it would no longer allow Arpaio’s officers to verify the immigration status of inmates due to Justice Department accusations that the sheriff’s office engaged in discriminatory conduct against Latinos.
The Maricopa County sheriff, known for his tough-on-crime and harsh immigration positions, said at the press conference that he hopes the federal government will follow through on its promise to send 50 federal agents to do immigration screening in his jail.
“I want to see how many agents are going to be coming to our jail,” Arpaio said, according to the wire service. “I want to see how long it will take for 50 agents from across the country to work in our jails.”
Arpaio’s aides say that only one Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer has worked at the country’s jails since last week.
On Dec. 15, the Department of Homeland Security said that the more than 90 jail officers employed in Maricopa County could no longer check on the immigration status of inmates.
That same day, the Justice Department had released a scathing report (http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1211/70498.html) accusing Arpaio and his office of targeting and mistreating Latinos.
The report found there was “reasonable cause” to believe Arpaio was involved in discriminatory policing practices, such as unlawful stops, detentions and arrests of Hispanics; discriminatory jail practices against Latino inmates with limited proficiency in English by punishing them and denying certain services; and unlawful retaliation against individuals criticizing the office’s practices.
