This thread is stupid! I couldn't think of anything smart so stupid will have to serve. If you can think of anything really stupid, it belongs here.

I've been feeling rather stupid lately.
I had a dumb-ass attack on the job the other day. Stained a three point arc in the wrong spot. Had to do some fancy rework.

Here are a few of many stupid quotes:

"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
-Anonymous
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."
-Albert Einstein

"Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education."
-Bertrand Russell
"Only the wisest and stupidest of men never change."
-Confucius
"The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt."
-Bertrand Russell
" They hate us for our freedom." George Bush. Actually this was not so stupid because it is absolutely true if you substitute the government as the real terrorist.

"Can't fix stupid" Ron White

So, has anyone done anything really stupid lately, or not so lately? Come on, fess up. It should make for fun reading.

Duh! George is my fweind.

Speaking of stupid, some fucktard on a bicycle appeared out of nowhere on the highway during a white-out snowstorm tonight. I almost took him out.

According to this article, we may all be too stupid to know how stupid we are.

Dunning wondered whether it was possible to measure one’s self-assessed level of competence against something a little more objective — say, actual competence. Within weeks, he and his graduate student, Justin Kruger, had organized a program of research. Their paper, “Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties of Recognizing One’s Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-assessments,” was published in 1999.

Sorry dogman. I have posted before about my work. I install, sand and finish gym floors. A stained 3 point arc is a fancy way to spice up a basketball floor. It accentuates the court.

Good read. Ever notice how stupid managers often are? In the corporate world, people are often promoted to their level of incompetence and that is where they finally end up. All downhill from there. I had some really stupid proffessers in college. Totall diz-brains. I once had a pretty sharp trig teacher who said "College is where the smart go to get smarter and the dumb go to get dumber."

I dig Woodman, I went to sand the bar top I was working on refinishing/rescuing, on about my 5th coat and the poly started rolling instead of just sanding like normal, I almost shit myself, thinking the worst but I let it dry one more day and with a little finesse it turned out good. Ya know though, no matter what trade your in. it's how well you can recover and fix your mistakes that makes you a master of that trade.

Yes, shit takes time to dry, and how fast, depends on temp and humidity. Smart to back off, the stuff was still semi liquid. Plus heat of sanding can on some materials turn them semi liquid.

I shouldn't talk. I've done my share of stupid things. Probably one of the worst was starting CPR on a guy who had rigor mortis. How do you not notice an arm sticking straight up in the air. Whoops.

Woodman, off topic, but what varnish do you use on basketball courts? Any recommendations? I'm thinking of refinishing my floors with the same stuff.

I know I'm not Woodman but I'll chime in anyway. Your application is different, much smaller and much more prone to everyday wear and tear. It also depends on what shape your floors are in right now. It's not just a matter of varnish but also of what kind of sealant/poly you want for the overall effect.

Thanks LT. The floors are solid teak. They don't make them that way anymore, due to the high price of teak. Right now, there's nothing on them. The floors are old, and I heard from other sailors that using the stuff on basketball courts is good because it's not as slippery when wet as regular varnished floors. But I don't know, just what I've heard.

For now just make sure you keep it rubbed down and conditioned with Teak oil, you can apply other stuff later.

The oiled floors just get real dirty though, there's nothing protecting the wood. Originally I was hoping for the floors to get that weathered teak 'gray', but instead old dirty looking floors. Like an old log cabin.

Gotta use varnish! You could use sand to make it less slippery
Go to a marine dealer and buy it. You could do a section at a time

Teak gray has got a salty look to it...besides, it's all about flying under the radar, right? I'll let the guy next to me have the shiny varnish.

There are a number of products out there. The best I've found for gym floors is oil base polyuerethane. The best oil base is Poloplaz. As far as the teak on your boat, I am really not sure. I love the look of old weathered floors. Your main consideration I guess is protecting your hard work and investment. The marine shop probably has a good spar varnish in stock.

Oil base has more grab (less slip) than water base, so I'd steer clear of the water-borne finishes.

Very interesting quote coming from Russell.

Yes. He was in the know, being one of 'their' planners. Very intelligent. Smart people seem to be so stupid sometimes. Intelligence is a many sided gem and memory is only one facet, yet if one can jump through all the hoops and parrot what they heard from the 'approved' source they are considered smart and doors will open for them. In the case of education then, the smarter you are the more they can take you down with their system. They will train the intellect right out of some.

Bertrand Russell wrote a book, I think it was called "On Being Happy." I read it many years ago. If memory serves he claimed the happiest people were those who weren't very intelligent and lived life in a simple manner. In other words if one is simple enough, that equated to being carefree. I think most of us here are pretty smart and we see the world in it's sinister entirety.

This reminds me of an old freind. First time I met him he was living in a shack out in the woods near here. Very smart man. I played chess with him and he was reading the paper and talking to a couple of other people who came there with me. He beat me, even with all that going on. Not that I was that good at chess, but I could usually hold my own. He was heavy into drugs, anything he could get. I was smoking some good grass wth him once and commented that 'the shit will make you stupid". He says "Isn't that the point?" Anyway the years have gone by and his excesses have taken away his intellect. I can now beat him at chess quite easily. Sad. Some people burn so bright they need to quench the fire. Some are dim bulbs and couldn't care less.
