Reporting Marty Griffin

Marty Griffin, Mt. Washington, Parking Space, Property Assessment, Richard Milesky PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A lot of city property owners are outraged over their reassessments, but one man says his beats them all.

The value of his 18-by-10-foot parking space on Mt. Washington jumped from $5,000 to more than $287,000.

That’s even more than his condo.

Richard Milesky, Jr., the proud owner of the underground parking space, says that until this week, the space was valued at $5,000.

“I think its prima fascia evidence that there’s been no attention to detail,” he said.

That's for a parking pad with cracks in the cement.....How much would a perfect pad be?

This is why those who are considering buy property should hold back.

insanity like this has to die a horrible death first

The assessor was looking to add value to the tax role. He did something wrong while tweaking values in his assessing program. My take anyway.

How the eff can you add value by fluffing numbers?

I know it happens everyday but when you think about it truly boggles the mind at the mental gymnastics that has to be pulled

Yep. So long as property tax exists, you're reduced to the status of "renter" on your "own" property! :(

I contacted a friend in that area (Pittsburgh) and learned that the entire county is undergoing a very flawed re-assessment. A couple years back, he and his wife bought an extremely small vacant lot next to their inner-city home in a very depressed neighborhood (urban pioneer types) for $900 to expand some garden space. New assessment: $5,500.00

This is how it works:

County says local assessor isn't high enough in assessments. They are in turn pressured by the state and so as you know, shit flows downhill. Poorly trained, and underpaid assessor tries to make up value in any way they can. They fire up the computer and start messing around with different factors in the program, trying to tweak the values. They cannot merely 'factor' the roll, it is against policy and law although it would be far more apt. The program is complex and life has many other demands. As stated above we truly do live in an idiocracy.
