i guess if you don't have a drivers license, no gas for you.

SAGINAW (WJRT) -
(12/19/11) - Could your driver's license be the key to stopping drive-offs at gas stations? One business owner thinks so, and he's already trying out the idea.

It's called Post-Pay. The idea behind the new technology is to make it easier to pay with cash at gas stations, while at the same time making it easier for police to catch people who pump and run without paying.

The first station to install the brand new technology is the Marathon gas station located in the 1800 block of N. Michigan Ave. in Saginaw.

"Innovative. I like it," said Dale Bradburn, a Birch Run man who was just learning about Post-Pay.

Now driver's have three options to pay and pump. They can pre-pay the cashier inside, pay at the pump with a credit or debit card, or try out Post-Pay by swiping their driver's license at the pump.

"Your information is not kept whatsoever. The cashier does not see it. Unless if you drive-off," explained Bob Hohn, president of Paxson Oil Company. Hohn also invented Post-Pay. A Connecticut company manufacturers it for him.

Hohn says the driver's license information is temporarily stored in a device inside the store. Drivers can then pump their gas before paying.

Hohn said he came up with his invention because he was fed up with costly drive-offs. "Probably three or four a week which would total a couple hundred dollars. And a lot of our competitors, it's the same rates."

Chad Barlow with EarthFirst Recycling fills up quite often, and says he'll try it out next time. "Sometimes I fill up the tank and I paid too much. I have to go back in the store. This way I can, you know, pump as much as I need and then go pay for it."

Bradburn thinks it's a good idea for the honest people out there. "I think it's OK if you're a law abiding citizen, you got nothing to worry about, you know. And your credit card, it's not your credit card, it's your driver's license, right? You got nothing to worry about if you're not doing nothing wrong."

If you do something wrong and drive-off, the gas station and police have your name and address.

In the two months it's been on the pumps at the N. Michigan location, employees have only had one pump and run according to Hohn. Down from the three to four a week employees were used to. "A fella three weeks ago, tested the concept. And sure enough police showed up at his door and he had to come in and pay for it." Hohn reports he also faces prosecution.

Hohn says he has a patent pending for the Post-Pay system.

So far only the station in Saginaw, and another one Paxson Oil owns in Bay City has the technology.

Can't wait to hear about the rash of ID thefts in Michigan in about a month.

i always knew that electronic stripe on the back would be used for something evil.

edit: this would be good for them when they need to ration fuels as well. "ah comrade, we see you buy 5 gallons fuel yesterday. no more purchase for you 5 days."

they won't be able to tell. it'll be like gun laws, only the honest people will be tracked. the criminals will just keep going on as usual. now in addition to being able to track how many firearms you buy, we can track how much fuel you buy. only terrorists need lots of fuel. it could be used for bombs, you know.

Because they are mechanical pumps rather then electronic.

They might seem antiquated but if there is EMP attack or massive solar flare.

Those will be the only pumps still working.

The city boys will eating humble pie served by the country bumpkins.

never thought about that, but i guess you're right. they're at this station that looks like it's from the 1950s. they sell gas, bottles of oil, fuel injection stuff, about 4 kinds of candy bars + gum. the pumps are a trip though. i'll get some audio o them on my phone as well next time i stop.

This is why the electronic stripe on mine has 'mysteriously' been damaged.

:)

This is exactly how we enslave ourselves. Problem > Reaction > Solution.

It was probably Federal agents who were stealing gas. Then when they come to investigate, they give him the idea to swipe peoples cards. Thank you Winston......

I haven't seen pump before you pay gas in many years. If you're paying cash and filling up, but aren't exactly sure how much it'll take, it's def more convienant to not have to over-pay just to go back inside to get change afterwards.
...but if you know you only want $10 worth, it's just as easy to pre-pay.

they won't be able to tell. it'll be like gun laws, only the honest people will be tracked. the criminals will just keep going on as usual. now in addition to being able to track how many firearms you buy, we can track how much fuel you buy. only terrorists need lots of fuel. it could be used for bombs, you know. The problem will come for those whose ID's have been stolen or otherwise compromised and the police show up at their door asking about gas theft.

Here in Oregon they pump the gas for you (state law).......the guy gives you a slip of paper with the pump number, you go inside, when he's finished you pay, they stamp the paper, you give it to the guy outside........you go.

WOW. That's unnecessarily complicated.

No big deal. It is optional. Just a business man trying not to get screwed by thieves.

The Oregon law about not being able to pump your own gas is about job creation. I liked the service when I lived there, although whenever I traveled out of state, I'd find my gas cap missing.

I have a gas station near me that doesn't have digital pumps, but it's in the middle of nowhere and a gallon of gas is a buck more than anywhere else.
