This is a quick Bible study for the Christians, non-Christians can of course, look on and see what they're missing :)

The book of Acts is a transitional book, as such it shows how the early chuch got started.
A major turning point is in the example God gave of Stephen and what the certain leaders did to him seeing that they could NOT RESIST his words he spoke as guided by the Holy Ghost.

What Stephen did

Acts 6:7 And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly; and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith.
Acts 6:8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people.
Acts 6:9 Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.
Acts 6:10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

Notice who was there Vs. 9 and the reason he was so despised Vs. 10

So, what did they do about him??

Acts 6:11 Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.
Suborned: In law, the crime of procuring a person to take such a false oath as constitutes perjury.

Next

Acts 6:12 And they stirred up the people, and the elders, and the scribes, and came upon him, and caught him, and brought him to the council,
They used the crowd to go against him. Sound familar?

Acts 6:13 And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:

FALSE WITNESSES < Got that? now... here it comes.....

Acts 6:14 For we have heard him say, that this Jesus of Nazareth shall destroy this place, and shall change the customs which Moses delivered us.

The FALSE witnesses said that they HEARD (isn't that all it takes now-a-days, a suspicion) that Jesus shall DESTROY THIS PLACE

...and there we have it. These guys brought in a bunch of false witnesses who said they heard that there might be a DESTRUCTION of this PLACE, they accused him of being a terrorist (todays term)

Another note to all this is the addition they tagged onto the accusation "shall change the customs which Moses delivered us"

They also accuse you of going against their status quo.

You, sir, are a very wise man. I don't believe there is much new under the sun, stories like these prove it.

Before Stephen's death this was in effect:

Luke 23:34, Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do

compare that to

59 And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.
60 And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

reason for forgiveness is nowhere to be found

This time they knew exactly what they were doing
